Card Failed in Grab or the Taxi Wants Cash in Vietnam? Paying the Driver by VietQR (2026)
The Grab app rejects your card at the airport, or the metered taxi has no card machine, and you have no dong. Here is what to do at the kerb: switch the ride to cash, ask the driver for a transfer, and pay the driver's bank QR as a visitor.
Quick answer: If your card fails in the Grab app, switch the trip to cash and pay the driver the fare the app shows; street taxis like Mai Linh and Vinasun are mostly cash anyway. With no dong on you, ask the driver for a bank transfer ("chuyen khoan duoc khong?"): if they show their bank QR, a foreign visitor can pay it with Fizen QR Pay, funded with USDT on Solana or BNB Chain. Not every driver will offer a QR, so keep a few small notes as backup.
Key takeaways
- Card declined in Grab? Switch to cash. The fare is fixed in the app, so you pay the driver exactly that.
- Street taxis are mostly cash. Travellers in 2025 found Vinasun and Mai Linh drivers refusing cards even in Saigon and Hanoi.
- A driver's personal VietQR is payable by visitors with Fizen QR Pay. Vietnamese account holders only, US$800 per payment, US$1,000 per week, no daily limit.
- Set it up before the airport. QR Pay needs USDT in your wallet first, and data on your phone at the kerb.
Tan Son Nhat, 11pm, after a delayed flight. You open Grab, add the card that worked all over Europe, and it fails. Again. The ATM in arrivals is out of service, the driver who accepted your cash trip is two minutes away, and you have exactly zero dong.
This is one of the most common first-night problems for visitors in Vietnam. Here is what works at the kerb, in the order to try it.
Why does a foreign card fail in Grab in Vietnam?
Grab in Vietnam takes cash or an international Visa or Mastercard added in the app. A Vietnam tourism guide updated in October 2026 warns that some cards are declined, banks may add fees and verification can fail, and advises adding the card before you arrive. The usual culprits are your bank blocking a first payment abroad, a 3D Secure code that never reaches a phone without a home SIM, or a card type the app will not save. Our Grab payment methods guide covers the card side; this post is about paying the driver once the card has given up.
| Ride | Card | Cash (dong) | Driver's VietQR |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grab or Be booked in the app | In the app, if it saves | Yes, switch the trip to cash | If the driver offers one |
| Xanh SM electric taxi | In the app, if your card saves | Yes | Ask |
| Mai Linh, Vinasun street taxi | Often refused | Yes, preferred | Ask |
| Hotel-arranged driver, small towns | Rarely | Yes, expected | Ask |
If you are standing at the kerb right now: the Fizen app lets a foreign visitor pay a driver's personal bank QR in dong, no Vietnamese bank account and no card needed. It runs on USDT you already hold, moved into the wallet on Solana or BNB Chain, so it is fastest if you set it up on the plane's Wi-Fi or at the hotel on night one. After that, every cash-only ride can be paid by QR wherever the driver has a code.
How do you pay a driver by bank transfer?
- In Grab, switch the payment to cash before you book. The fare is shown up front, so there is no haggling.
- At the end of the ride, ask "chuyen khoan duoc khong?" (can I pay by transfer?). Some drivers will pull up their bank app's receive code; others prefer cash.
- Type the exact fare from the Grab app or the taxi meter. Photograph the meter if it is a street taxi.
- Check the name on the confirm screen, pay, and show the driver the completed payment.
A driver's personal receive code belongs to their own Vietnamese bank account, which is the kind of code Fizen QR Pay pays in Vietnam.
What do people who have done it say?
- The "broken" card machine. A traveller in Saigon had a Vinasun taxi outside Ben Thanh Market refuse his card, with the driver calling the machine broken (June 2025). Assume street taxis want cash.
- Grab with a fintech card worked. Travellers paid Grab in Hanoi and Saigon with a linked Revolut or Wise card in 2025, while other cards were refused; add a second card before you fly.
- Outside the big cities, think cash. In Hue, a taxi wanted exact change, and hotel-arranged drivers in Hue and Ninh Binh were cash only.
- Late-night Da Nang and Hoi An have fewer cars. Grab and Be worked, but coverage thinned late at night; a Hoi An taxi took 150,000 dong in cash.
- Carry small notes. 10,000, 20,000 and 50,000 dong notes save arguments about change, a guide updated in October 2026 advises.
How does a visitor set up QR payments for rides?
Fizen QR Pay is for foreign visitors in Vietnam and the Philippines; people who live in Vietnam cannot use it in Vietnam. It pays VietQR bank codes and VNPay, MoMo and ZaloPay codes, and in Vietnam only codes of Vietnamese account holders. The order:
- Create or import your Fizen wallet, which is self-custody.
- Get USDT on Solana or BNB Chain into it. USDT on another network, or another token, cannot be deposited into QR Pay; Swap and Bridge in the app moves it first.
- Deposit from the wallet into QR Pay: no gas on BNB Chain, a little SOL needed on Solana. KYC applies per wallet and per device.
- Scan the driver's code, type the fare, check the name, confirm.
USDT on an exchange? In the Fizen app tap Receive, choose USDT on BNB Chain (or Solana) and copy the address. On the exchange, withdraw USDT on the same network (often labelled BEP20 or BSC, or SOL), paste it and send a small test first. Some exchanges ask you to confirm the address is your own wallet.
Limits are US$800 per payment and US$1,000 per week, with no daily limit. The Fizen wallet is self-custody; USDT you move into QR Pay is governed by the QR Pay Terms, so only move in what you plan to spend. Screens: QR Pay getting started guide.
What if the payment fails with the driver waiting?
- It shows processing. Do not pay again; show the driver the screen and wait for the final status, or you may pay twice.
- It failed because the bank is under maintenance. Banks sometimes run maintenance late at night, exactly when you land. Try again in a minute, or pay cash and contact support to check.
- The message has a symbol. Some drivers' codes carry a note with a hyphen or slash, which many banks reject. Ask for a plain code; Fizen's keyboard has no special characters.
- The account is a foreigner's. Rare for drivers, but QR Pay will not pay it in Vietnam.

What does the first night look like once this is sorted?
You land, the Grab is booked on cash, and the fare goes to the driver's QR at the hotel door while he unloads your bag. None of it works without data in arrivals: the Fizen app also sells a data-only eSIM for Vietnam, payable with USDT or by card via Stripe, best installed before you fly. As a new Fizen programme, a US$10 eSIM credit is waiting in the app's eSIM tab, taken off the bill automatically at checkout (up to 30% of each plan), no code needed.
Frequently asked questions
