QR Payment Failed in Vietnam? 6 Reasons and What to Do (2026)

Quick answer: A QR payment in Vietnam usually fails for one of six reasons: the receiving bank is under maintenance, the payment is still processing, the code belongs to a foreigner's account, the code is old or already used, the transfer message has special characters, or the amount is over your limit. If it says processing, do not pay again. If it says failed, the amount is released back to your balance and you can retry later or ask support to check.

Key takeaways

  • Processing is not failed. Wait for the final status. Paying again while it processes can mean paying the vendor twice.
  • Bank maintenance is real and usually at night. Vietnamese banks and NAPAS schedule overnight windows when instant transfers and VietQR can drop out.
  • Read the code. An expired bill code, a foreigner's account, or a message with a hyphen or slash will be rejected.
  • Know your limits. With Fizen QR Pay: up to US$800 per payment and US$1,000 per week, no daily limit.

It is 11pm on a Saturday, the phở is finished, and the screen says your payment failed. You try again. Now it says processing. The owner is polite but watching. Most of the time the fix takes a minute, provided you know which of six problems you are looking at, and that one of them means you should stop pressing the button.

Is it failed or still processing?

This decides everything else. A Vietnamese QR payment is a bank transfer, and a transfer can sit in processing for a while when a bank is slow to answer. If you pay again while the first one is still processing, both can go through.

  • Processing: do not pay again. Wait for the final status. If it stays stuck, contact support and show the vendor the screen.
  • Failed: the money has not gone. Under the Fizen QR Pay Terms, a payment that fails or does not settle releases the reserved amount back to your available balance, though the release can take a little time. You can retry or pay another way.

Why would the bank be under maintenance at night?

Vietnamese banks and NAPAS, the national switch behind VietQR, run maintenance and testing in late-night windows, when instant interbank transfers and QR payments can be unavailable for short periods. Techcombank, for example, told customers that during NAPAS testing on the nights of 19 and 23 April 2026, from 22:00 to 00:50, instant transfers and VietQR payments could drop out intermittently. HSBC Vietnam publishes a running schedule of similar windows, most of them overnight from Saturday into Sunday.

The pattern to spot: the payment fails at one shop, and the next shop on the same bank fails too. Wait and try again later, pay cash for now, or contact Fizen support to check the status. It is not something wrong with your account.

Why does a foreigner's account get rejected?

In Vietnam, Fizen QR Pay pays only QR codes linked to Vietnamese account holders. Paying an account held by a foreigner is restricted. You will meet this at cafés, gyms or guesthouses run by expats who are paid into their own account. Read the name on the printed card or the confirm screen: if it is clearly not a Vietnamese name, ask the owner for a code linked to a Vietnamese account, or pay another way. This rule applies in Vietnam only, not in the Philippines.

Why do expired codes and special characters break a payment?

VietQR has static codes, the printed cards that never change, and dynamic codes made for one bill. VietQR's own documentation says a dynamic code stops working once that order has been paid, and is not meant to be printed and displayed. A photo of last night's bill, or a code on a receipt from earlier, may simply be dead. Ask for a fresh one.

Messages are the other trap. VietQR's documentation limits the transfer message to plain Latin letters without accents and no special characters, and many banks reject a transfer whose message contains a hyphen, slash, dot or equals sign. Fizen's in-app message keyboard has only letters, numbers and spaces, so you cannot add one by mistake. If the merchant's code already carries such a message, tell the merchant and ask for a plain code.

What are the Fizen QR Pay limits?

Up to US$800 per payment and US$1,000 per week per user, with no daily limit. A hotel bill or a tailor's deposit can run into the per-payment limit; a long week of meals, tours and shopping can reach the weekly one. Any fee shows in the app before you confirm.

What if the problem is before the payment, at the deposit?

If your QR Pay balance never arrived, check how you sent it. Fizen QR Pay is funded only with USDT on Solana or BNB Chain, by visitors and foreigners; there is no bank link, card or dong deposit. USDT on another network, or another token, cannot be deposited into QR Pay. If your USDT is on another chain, use Swap and Bridge in the app first, and send a small amount before a large one.

Every deposit is also screened before it is credited, through KYT, anti-money-laundering, counter-terrorist-financing, sanctions and fraud checks. These checks protect you: they keep stolen money out of the system you are paying from. The Fizen wallet is self-custody; USDT you move into QR Pay is governed by the Fizen QR Pay Terms, so only move in what you plan to spend.

Sorted, the late-night version looks like this: the screen says processing, you wait, it turns successful, you show the owner, and nobody pays twice.

Frequently asked questions

My QR payment says processing. Should I pay again?

No. Wait for the final status, otherwise you may pay the merchant twice. If it stays stuck, contact Fizen support.

My Fizen QR Pay payment failed. Where is my money?

Under the QR Pay Terms, a payment that fails or does not settle releases the reserved amount back to your available balance, though this can take a little time.

Why do QR payments fail late at night in Vietnam?

Banks and NAPAS run maintenance and testing in overnight windows, when instant transfers and VietQR payments can be briefly unavailable. Retry later or contact support.

Why does one shop's QR code fail when others work?

Often because the code is linked to a foreigner's account, the code is an old bill code, or its pre-filled message has special characters. Ask the merchant for a new, plain code linked to a Vietnamese account.

Is there a daily limit on Fizen QR Pay?

No. The limits are up to US$800 per payment and US$1,000 per week per user.

Can I top up Fizen QR Pay with USDT on Tron or Ethereum?

No. QR Pay is funded only with USDT on Solana or BNB Chain. USDT on another network cannot be deposited; use Swap and Bridge in the app to move it first.
