Siargao Signal, ATMs and QR Ph in 2026: What Works in General Luna and Beyond

Quick answer: As of 2 November 2026, expect usable mobile data around General Luna and Dapa and patchier signal on boats, near lagoons and on the island's remote coasts. Carry enough pesos for several days, because the island's banking is thin and many small operators take cash only, while QR Ph codes work at a growing number of cafes and shops.

Key takeaways

  • Signal: Globe switched on three sites in General Luna, Pilar and Dapa in October 2019 and added LTE by March 2021; remote coasts and water remain the weak spots.
  • Backhaul improved: a Globe-reported submarine cable landed on Siargao in September 2022, where the island had relied only on microwave radio.
  • Banks: as of January 2026, BDO had opened the island's first full-service branch, alongside two BDO Network Bank branches and 30 Cash Agad partners (Daily Tribune).
  • Cash: guides say ATMs can run empty on busy weekends and that cash is still king in remote beach areas.
  • QR Ph: the national standard is widely used in towns; do not count on it on boats or at lagoon gates.

You are on a habal-habal in General Luna with ten minutes to the pier. The boat operator wants pesos, the ATM you passed had a queue, and your map has just frozen on the road to Cloud 9. Siargao is a small island with a big reputation, and what it asks of visitors is simple preparation.

Here is what we can verify about signal, cash and QR Ph, dated, with traveller tips labelled as tips. For prices and fees, see our Siargao money guide.

How good is the signal in General Luna compared with the rest of Siargao?

Verifiable history first. In October 2019 Globe switched on three cell sites in General Luna, Pilar and Dapa, saying hilly terrain and a spread-out population made sites costly to build (Inquirer Technology). By March 2021 Globe said LTE connectivity was available on the island (GMA, sponsored). In September 2022 Globe reported that a domestic submarine cable had landed on Siargao, where the island had relied only on microwave radio (Philstar). That is better backhaul, but it says nothing about a specific beach.

Fragility is on the record too. After Typhoon Odette in December 2021, damaged sites and power cuts cut communications on the island; Smart set up call centres in Dapa and used satellite phones, and Globe restored service in Del Carmen (Coconuts).

Traveller and seller guides, which we label as such, rate both networks as good on the General Luna and Cloud 9 strip and say coverage thins inland and on the outer islands. They disagree on which network is stronger, and some say a brownout can drop one network's towers while another keeps working. We found no official public coverage map comparing the two on the island.

Which eSIM should you take to Siargao?

Any eSIM can only use the towers the carrier has. Fizen's Philippines-only plans run on Globe 4G and 5G as of 2 November 2026; some Asia regional plans list Smart 5G, so check Package details. How to choose a Philippines eSIM compares plans, and unlimited data explains why a bigger plan does not fix a coverage gap.

Install before you fly, download offline maps for Siargao and the route to your pier, and screenshot bookings. If you run a business or remote job, consider a second network as a backup.

How much cash do you need, and what about ATMs?

Banking on the island is thinner than the tourism. A Daily Tribune piece of 20 January 2026 says that before the new branch the island had no full-service bank branch, and that BDO has since opened its first one, alongside two BDO Network Bank branches and 30 Cash Agad partners. In March 2021, a sponsored GMA piece counted one rural bank and three ATMs serving the area. Both are dated snapshots, not a live ATM map.

Guide sites say General Luna's ATMs can run out of cash on busy weekends, and that cards are accepted mainly at larger resorts and restaurants. Wise's August 2026 guide says cash is still king in remote beach areas, naming parts of Palawan and Siargao. Our tip, labelled as one: withdraw pesos in the city you fly from, carry small notes, and keep a reserve.

Is QR Ph accepted in Siargao?

QR Ph is the official national QR standard approved by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, and different bank apps and e-wallets can scan the same code (Wise, 3 August 2026). The Philippine Payments Management Inc. said on 1 September 2026 that 2.5 million local merchants and SMEs already accept QR Ph (The Paypers). In Siargao itself, about 30 establishments accepted GCash in 2021 (GMA, sponsored). Expect QR Ph at cafes, shops and many stays in General Luna, and expect cash on boats, tricycles and lagoon gates.

How can a visitor pay QR Ph without GCash?

GCash's visitor account, GTourist, depends on your country; see our GTourist explainer. The alternative is Fizen QR Pay. Fizen QR Pay lets foreign visitors pay QR Ph codes from USDT; it is not available to Philippine residents in the Philippines. It is funded only with USDT on Solana or BNB Chain (BNB Chain deposits need no gas; Solana needs a little SOL); USDT on another network or another token cannot be deposited. The flow: create or import your Fizen wallet, get USDT on Solana or BNB Chain into it, deposit from the wallet into QR Pay (KYC per wallet and per device; a new device means KYC again), then scan and pay. Limits: US$800 per payment, US$1,000 per week, no daily limit. The Fizen wallet is self-custody; USDT you move into QR Pay is governed by the QR Pay Terms, so move in only what you plan to spend. Steps: QR Pay getting started.

Do the deposit on hotel Wi-Fi before you head out. Where a sign shows a QR Ph code, scan; where it shows nothing, pay cash. For another cash-heavy island, see the El Nido and Port Barton ATM guide.

What should you do before you fly to Siargao?

  1. Install your eSIM at home on Wi-Fi and download offline maps.
  2. Withdraw pesos in Manila, Cebu or Surigao and carry small notes.
  3. Set up QR Pay, if you plan to use it, and deposit only what you plan to spend.
  4. Pay boat and tour operators before you leave the pier, in cash or by QR where they show a code.
  5. Screenshot your bookings and keep a power bank, since a brownout can take down a tower.

Your travel eSIM gift is waiting: US$10 of eSIM credit. It lives in the eSIM tab of the Fizen app, comes off the bill automatically at checkout, up to 30% of each plan, with no code. Pay with USDT or by card via Stripe.

What do travellers say?

Reddit threads could not be opened while writing this, so these tips are paraphrased from guide sites and forum snippets. Treat them as traveller tips, not verified facts.

  • Bring more cash than you think you need for the weekend.
  • Do not count on signal near lagoons or on boats.
  • A Sayak airport or General Luna SIM counter is the usual local-SIM route, though availability is not confirmed.
