GCash GTourist Explained: Who Can Use It in 2026 and What to Use If You Can't
In June 2026 a forum asker was told GTourist was for Americans only. GCash's own help pages now list about 130 countries. Here is who can actually sign up, where people get stuck, and the fallback if your country is not on the list.
Quick answer: GTourist is GCash's 30-day account for foreign visitors aged 18 and over, opened with a non-Philippine mobile number and activated only once you are in the Philippines with location turned on. As of 26 October 2026, GCash lists about 130 eligible countries (including the US, UK, Australia, Canada, Japan, Korea, India and most of Europe); if yours is not listed, pay by card where accepted, carry cash, or scan QR Ph codes with another app such as Fizen QR Pay.
Key takeaways
- No longer US-only. GCash's help centre lists about 130 countries as of 26 October 2026. Vietnam, Russia, Mexico and Nigeria were not on it when we checked.
- Two levels. A basic account runs payments through a linked Visa or Mastercard; a passport scan and selfie unlock bank cash-in and sending money.
- Roaming must be on. The six-digit sign-up OTP goes to your home number, so a data-only eSIM alone will not receive it.
- The clock is 30 days. After that the wallet deactivates, so spend or transfer the balance before you fly home.
You are at a carinderia in Cebu, the queue is behind you, and the only sign on the counter is a GCash QR code. That moment is why so many visitors ask about GTourist. In a June 2026 TripAdvisor thread, an American asker had read it was for US tourists only, and long-stayers told him not to bother.
Four months on, the picture has moved. This is the dedicated GTourist explainer; for GCash rules for residents and the general picture, see our GCash for foreigners guide.
What is GTourist and who can use it in 2026?
GTourist lets visitors use GCash for 30 days to pay Philippine merchants by QR. According to GCash's help centre, checked on 26 October 2026, you need to be 18 or older, sign up with a foreign mobile number or SIM, and be from a country on its list. You can register before you fly, but the account activates only when you are in the Philippines with location sharing on.
The list now runs to about 130 countries, from Albania to Zimbabwe, including the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, India, China and most of Europe. GCash says more countries will follow. Several big visitor markets were missing when we checked, among them Vietnam, Russia, Mexico and Nigeria, so open the list before you plan around it.
Basic or fully verified: what is the difference?
| Basic GTourist | Fully verified GTourist | |
|---|---|---|
| What you need | Foreign number, a Visa or Mastercard in your name | Plus your foreign passport and a selfie |
| How you pay | Payments pass through to your linked card | Linked card, plus bank cash-in to a wallet balance |
| Scan to pay at merchants | Yes | Yes |
| Bank cash-in, send money | No | Yes |
Verification is done in the app (Profile, then Verify Now) and GCash says you get an SMS result within 24 hours. GCash's limits page, updated for 1 October 2026, places GTourist users in the same tier as fully verified adults. Other cash-in routes listed for GTourist are international banks and partners and PayPal, and GCash notes some fees may apply.
Why does GTourist sign-up fail?
- No OTP. The code is sent by SMS to your home number. Turn on roaming for that SIM before you start; a data-only travel eSIM cannot receive it.
- Name mismatch. Enter your details exactly as on your passport, including any middle name.
- Card refused. Ask your bank to enable online and international payments before linking the card.
- Country not supported. If your number's country is not on the list, the app will not let you through.
- Location off. The account stays inactive until the app can see you are in the Philippines.
GCash also says it may deny, suspend or end GTourist access at any time, and that access on a future visit is at its discretion.
What happens to your money after 30 days?
The account deactivates automatically and you lose access to the wallet, so plan the last few days. GCash's help centre says GTourist cannot be used outside the Philippines even inside the 30 days. To move leftover pesos out, it describes a Transfer, then International flow to a foreign bank account or e-wallet, entered in PHP. The simpler habit is to load only what you will spend.
What do people who have done it say?
- Cash still rules outside the cities. Long-stayers in the June 2026 thread said the further you go from metro and tourist areas, the more cash you need, whatever app you use.
- Even app fans carry pesos. One Australian who lived in Puerto Galera and Romblon keeps GCash and Maya loaded, and still carries about 20,000 pesos in cash on remote trips.
- Roaming first. The same poster warned that you need roaming on your home SIM to get the six-digit registration code.
- A travel card covers card-accepting places. Several regulars said a multi-currency debit card does the job wherever cards work.
- Maya can be easier for residents. In an expat.com thread, a resident said GCash refused his SRRV card while Maya verified his passport right away (2023 to 2024, resident accounts, not GTourist).
What can you use if GTourist does not work for you?
Most shop codes in the Philippines follow the national QR Ph standard, which is why you do not strictly need GCash to pay them. Fizen QR Pay scans QR Ph codes for visitors and foreigners (Filipino residents cannot use it in the Philippines), with no Philippine number and no Philippine ID.
The flow: create or import your Fizen wallet (non-custodial), get USDT on Solana or BNB Chain into it, deposit from the wallet into QR Pay (KYC per wallet and per device), then scan and pay. Depositing on BNB Chain needs no gas; on Solana you need a little SOL. QR Pay is funded only with USDT on Solana or BNB Chain, with no bank link or card, and USDT on another network, or another token, cannot be deposited. Limits are US$800 per payment and US$1,000 per week. There is no 30-day expiry. Steps are in the getting started guide.
Be honest with yourself about the rest of the trip: a card for hotels and malls, cash for tricycles and sari-sari stores. The Fizen wallet is self-custody; USDT you move into QR Pay is governed by the QR Pay Terms, so only move in what you plan to spend.

How long does a GTourist account last?
30 days from activation, which happens when you log in while in the Philippines. After that the account deactivates automatically.

No, you need a foreign number. Roaming must be on so you receive the six-digit OTP by SMS.

Yes, with an app that supports QR Ph. Fizen QR Pay does this for visitors and foreigners, within US$800 per payment and US$1,000 per week.
Scan QR Ph without a local wallet
