Which iPhones have no SIM tray anywhere?

iPhone Duo: Apple's titanium foldable, with a 7.6-inch inner and 5.4-inch outer display. Apple's UK page says it "does not support a physical SIM".
iPhone Air: eSIM-only in the UK as well, so effectively worldwide.
iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max and iPhone 17: eSIM-only only in the markets above.

All of them hold two active eSIMs and store eight or more, according to Apple's spec pages, so a home line plus several travel eSIMs fit on one phone.

Can I use a local SIM card abroad with an eSIM-only iPhone?

Not a physical one. You have three ways to get data:

One check before any of them: the phone must be carrier-unlocked. Apple's test is Settings > General > About, where Carrier Lock should read "No SIM Restrictions".

How do you travel with an eSIM-only iPhone, step by step?

Check the unlock as above, at home, not at the gate.
Buy a travel eSIM for the destination and install it on home Wi-Fi. Activation needs a connection, and airport Wi-Fi can ask for an SMS code first.
Label the lines "Home" and "Travel" so you switch on roaming for the right one.
On landing, accept iOS 26's "Turn On Travel eSIM" prompt or go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data and pick the travel line. Turn on Data Roaming for the travel line only.
Keep the home line on with its data roaming off, so bank one-time codes still arrive by SMS.

Apple's arrival prompt offers "Travel eSIM Only" or "Travel eSIM and Current eSIM". With both on, the travel eSIM carries data, and Apple warns you may still incur roaming fees on the home line.

What about China, bank codes and WhatsApp?

China mainland: Apple's travel page, updated 22 October 2026, says only the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone Duo, iPhone 17e and iPhone Air support eSIM in mainland China. A phone bought there cannot add a non-mainland eSIM while inside China, so travellers with mainland models install a travel eSIM after they leave, for example on airport Wi-Fi at the destination. Visitors heading into China should set up any travel eSIM fully before they arrive.
Bank codes: travel eSIMs are data-only, so SMS codes keep arriving on your home line as long as it stays on.
WhatsApp and iMessage: they run over whichever line carries data and keep your usual number.
