InstaPay QR vs QR Ph (2026): What's the Difference, and Which One Should a Shop Show You?
Same national QR technology, two jobs: QR Ph pays merchants and the merchant carries the fee, InstaPay QR sends money to a person and the sender may pay ₱10. How to tell which one is in front of you, checked on 3 November 2026.
Quick answer: Yes, they are different: InstaPay QR is for person-to-person transfers, where the sending app may charge a fee (₱10 at GCash and Maya), and QR Ph is for paying merchants, where the merchant bears the fee. Both use the same national QR technology over the InstaPay rail, a split the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) and PPMI set in 2024 and restated on 29 July 2026, so at a shop you should be scanning a QR Ph merchant code (as of 3 November 2026).
Key takeaways
- QR Ph = paying a business. Person-to-merchant; fees are covered by the merchant (BSP and PPMI, restated 29 July 2026).
- InstaPay QR = sending to a person. Person-to-person; fees may apply, ₱10 at GCash and Maya since July 2026.
- Same technology. The 2024 rebranding did not change the QR standard or interoperability (Newsbytes, 29 July 2026); one scanner reads both.
- Check the name before you confirm. A business name means a merchant payment; a person's name and a transfer fee means InstaPay QR.
You finish a plate of sisig at a family-run spot in Poblacion, and the owner holds up her phone with a QR code and her own name under it. You scan, and your app shows a ₱10 fee. That fee is the clue: you are not paying a shop, you are sending money to a person. The Philippines now uses two names for codes that look identical, and the difference decides who pays.
What is InstaPay?
InstaPay is the BSP's real-time transfer rail between banks and e-wallets, run with the Philippine Payments Management, Inc. (PPMI). Money moves in seconds, any time, between participating institutions. A standard transfer is capped at ₱50,000 per transaction (HitPay, updated October 2026). On 29 July 2026 the BSP launched InstaPay for Business, which lets registered businesses send up to ₱500,000 per transaction (BitPinas).
When you pay a QR code from one app to an account in another app, InstaPay is usually the pipe underneath. That is why the QR names can confuse: both codes ride the same rail.
What is QR Ph?
QR Ph is the national QR code standard, set by BSP Circular 1055 in October 2019. The BSP required payment providers to show QR Ph codes from 1 July 2023 and to switch off proprietary codes after that (GMA News, 10 March 2023). PayMongo counts 40+ participating banks and wallets, including GCash, Maya, BPI and BDO.
It is now the country's biggest digital payment habit: 2.47 billion QR Ph transactions worth ₱1.16 trillion in 2025, the first year QR Ph beat debit and credit cards, according to the BSP (Daily Tribune, 19 August 2026).
InstaPay QR vs QR Ph: what is the difference?

| Who pays the fee | The merchant | The sender, depending on the app |
| Typical fee for you | None | ₱10 at GCash and Maya; free at BDO, BPI, Metrobank |
| Name on the confirm screen | Business or store name | A person's name |

Which code should a shop show you?
A QR Ph merchant code. PayMongo's August 2026 guide warns businesses that collecting sales through InstaPay QR means "using a consumer rail for commercial collection", and BSP Memorandum M-2026-017 (8 May 2026) tells payment providers to separate merchant accounts from personal ones, with sellers who collect sales in personal accounts explicitly in scope. If a seller shows a personal code anyway, you may be the one paying the transfer fee.
- Before you tap Pay, read the name. A store name means QR Ph; a person's name means a transfer.
- Look for a fee line. A merchant payment should show none for you.
- Ask for the shop's QR Ph code if you are shown a personal one.
- Screenshot the confirmation. GCash texts both sides after a QR payment, but a screenshot settles questions at the counter.
Can I pay an InstaPay QR or QR Ph code as a visitor?
With GCash GTourist, often yes: GTourist users can scan a Philippine merchant's QR code. See our GCash for foreigners guide and QR Ph vs GCash explainer.
Without GCash, Fizen QR Pay pays QR Ph codes for travellers and foreigners, and the merchant receives pesos. Create or import your Fizen wallet, get USDT on Solana or BNB Chain into it, deposit from the wallet into QR Pay and pass KYC (per wallet and per device), then scan and confirm. BNB Chain deposits need no gas; Solana needs a little SOL. USDT on another network, or another token, cannot be deposited. Limits: US$800 per payment, US$1,000 per week. Steps: QR Pay getting started. Not for residents of the Philippines.
Your money. Your freedom. No borders. The Fizen wallet is self-custody. QR Pay works differently: USDT you move into QR Pay is governed by the Fizen QR Pay Terms, so only move in what you plan to spend. New app users also get a US$10 travel eSIM gift.
Frequently asked questions
Are InstaPay and QR Ph the same?
No. InstaPay is the real-time rail; QR Ph is the national QR standard. Since 2024, codes for paying merchants are called QR Ph and codes for personal transfers InstaPay QR.
Is InstaPay QR free?
It depends on the sending app. GCash and Maya charge ₱10 to another bank or wallet; BDO, BPI and Metrobank made transfers free in July 2026. GCash to GCash is free.
Can I scan an InstaPay QR with a QR Ph app?
Yes. The rebranding did not change the standard or interoperability, so the same scanner reads both. The difference is the receiver and who pays the fee.
Why did I pay a fee at a shop?
You probably scanned the owner's personal InstaPay QR, which is a transfer. A QR Ph merchant code puts the fee on the merchant. Ask for the store's QR Ph code.
What is the InstaPay limit per transaction?
₱50,000 for a standard transfer. Registered businesses can send up to ₱500,000 per transaction with InstaPay for Business, launched on 29 July 2026.
