Seoul Right Now: Seongsu Flagships, Jongno 3-ga Nights and What Changed (2026)
Time Out just named a Seoul neighbourhood the coolest in the world, Seongsu is swapping pop-ups for flagships, and subway machines finally take your foreign card. What is new in Seoul this autumn and how to do it well.
Quick answer: Seoul's two hot districts this autumn are Jongno 3-ga, named the world's coolest neighbourhood by Time Out in September 2026 for its hanok alleys and evening street-food tables, and Seongsu, which is shifting from pop-ups to permanent flagships such as Olive Young Beauty Mansion. Pop-ups are spreading to Yongsan and Jamsil. Since 17 March 2026, subway ticket machines at 273 stations accept foreign Visa and Mastercard, with an average 3.7% fee. The K-ETA waiver for 22 countries and territories runs to 31 December 2026.
Key takeaways
- Jongno 3-ga is the new must-walk: Ikseon-dong by day, Seosulla-gil in the afternoon, street-food tables on Donhwamun-ro 11-gil at night.
- Seongsu is now flagships, not just pop-ups: Olive Young Beauty Mansion (June), Subdued (July) and YSL Beauty Boutique (September) opened in 2026.
- Pop-up entry without a Korean number usually means the on-site kiosk: arrive 30 to 60 minutes early and avoid weekend afternoons.
- Foreign cards now work at subway machines on Lines 1 to 8, for transport cards, 1 to 7 day passes and single tickets, with an average 3.7% fee.
You queued forty minutes for a Seongsu pop-up, reached the door, and the staff asked for a Korean phone number to confirm your booking. Seoul moves fast: the street everyone filmed last year is now lined with permanent flagships, a neighbourhood across town has just been called the coolest in the world, and the subway finally takes your card. Seoul drew a record 13.14 million foreign visitors from January to September 2026, so here is how to do the new Seoul without wasting the afternoon.
Why is Jongno 3-ga suddenly the coolest neighbourhood in the world?
Time Out ranked Jongno 3-ga first on its 2026 list of the world's coolest neighbourhoods, announced on 16 September, for its late-evening outdoor dining, independent shops and the hanok alleys of Ikseon-dong. It is not new to Seoulites, but it is newly on every visitor's list. A day that follows the neighbourhood's own rhythm:
- Morning: steamed bread at Mil Toast, one of the few places open early.
- From about 11:00: Ikseon-dong's boutiques, photobooths and the viral salt bread (sogeum-ppang) once the shops wake up; pot rice at Solsot, or a hanwoo patty at Aiso near Exit 2.
- Afternoon: Seosulla-gil, the lane along the stone wall of Jongmyo Shrine, for Cafe SaSa's mugwort latte, jewellery studios and craft beer.
- Evening: the pocha tables on Donhwamun-ro 11-gil for tteokbokki, ramyeon and cheap drinks.
Skip the weekend if you want Ikseon-dong's alleys to yourself: they are narrow, and Saturday afternoons are shoulder to shoulder. A weekday morning start is the local move.
Is Seongsu still the pop-up capital?
Seongsu is growing up. The Seoul Economic Daily reported on 26 September 2026 that brands are signing permanent flagships along Yeonmujang-gil and the alleys around it: Olive Young Beauty Mansion in June, Italian fashion label Subdued in July and a YSL Beauty Boutique in September, joining Supreme, New Era and others. Foreign visitors to Seongsu rose 82% in 2025.
Pop-ups have not gone, they have spread. Of 1,799 pop-up stores tracked in the first half of 2026, Seongdong's share fell to 26.0% from 34.9% a year earlier, while Yongsan rose to 9.2% and Songpa to 9.6%. In practice, check IPark Mall in Yongsan and Lotte World Mall in Jamsil before crossing the city for Seongsu.
Skip Seongsu if you only want one viral pop-up: find out where it is first, because it may be in a mall across town.
How do you actually get into a Seoul pop-up?
Most booking systems assume a Korean identity. A February 2026 pop-up guide sums up the options:
- Kakao Channel and Naver Booking need a Korean phone number and ID verification, so most visitors cannot use them.
- On-site kiosks take a passport or email; look for a foreigner QR code near the entrance and arrive 30 to 60 minutes before opening.
- Some pop-ups take sign-ups through a form linked in their Instagram bio.
- Timing: weekend afternoons from 14:00 to 17:00 are peak; Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons are much quieter.
Registering is not entry. Unless you receive a confirmation code or a timed ticket, you are on a standby list, so keep your phone online and loud.
What changed for getting around Seoul?
| Change | Since | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Foreign Visa and Mastercard at subway ticket machines | 17 March 2026 | 440 machines at 273 stations on Lines 1 to 8 sell transport cards, 1 to 7 day passes and single tickets; average fee 3.7% |
| K-ETA waiver for 22 countries and territories | Extended to 31 December 2026 | Covered passports need no K-ETA until year end; check before a New Year trip |
| Seoul hiking centres for visitors | Bukhansan, Bugaksan, Gwanaksan | Gear rental and lockers, 09:00 to 18:00, each closed one weekday |
The subway change is the big practical one: no more hunting for cash to load a card on day one. KakaoPay and Naver Pay also work at the new machines.
How do you stay online for Seoul's queues and maps?
Pop-up standby pings, Naver Map or KakaoMap directions (Google Maps still gives limited routes in Korea), and the Instagram post that says where the pop-up moved: Seoul assumes you are online in the street. Buy and install a travel eSIM at home on Wi-Fi, keep your home SIM on for bank codes, and switch the travel line on after landing.
One option is the Fizen South Korea eSIM on LG U+, 4G and 5G (catalog checked 26 October 2026). Fixed plans run from 1 GB for 3 days to 50 GB for 30 days and slow to 128 kbps once used up; unlimited plans run 3 to 30 days with no speed cap stated. Most plans cannot be topped up, so size it for the trip: a week of maps, booking pages and short videos fits in 10 GB for 7 days, and heavy streaming points to unlimited. Check the eSIM tab in the app or fizen.io/esim for current plans for South Korea.
If a verified fault on Fizen's side stops the eSIM working, you get a free 1-for-1 replacement for the length of the trip, or a refund for the days you could not use, handled by a real person in chat. Changed plans? An unused, not-yet-installed eSIM can usually be taken back; eligibility depends on the plan, check Package details or ask chat. The honest alternative: if you need a Korean number to verify Naver or Kakao bookings, a local prepaid SIM with a number does a job a data-only eSIM cannot. Fizen is building the stablecoin neobank for people on the move. New users get US$10 of eSIM credit in the Fizen app's eSIM tab.
Sorted, the day goes like this: the standby ping arrives while you finish a mugwort latte on Seosulla-gil, and you are back in Seongsu before your slot opens.
