Best Way to Carry Money to Thailand from India (2026)

Quick answer: Carry three things: about 20,000 baht in cash per person, because Thai immigration can ask to see it under the 30-day visa-free scheme for Indians in force since 15 September 2026; a forex card for most spending; and one credit card set to pay in baht as backup. RBI rules let your bank sell you up to US$3,000 in foreign currency notes per trip. UPI does not work at Thai shops in 2026.

Key takeaways

  • 20,000 baht in cash per traveller is the amount Thai embassy advice says to carry for visa-free entry. Have it in your wallet, not in your plans.
  • US$3,000 in notes per trip is what an Indian bank can sell you; the rest goes on a forex card. Thailand only asks you to declare foreign currency above US$20,000.
  • TCS: forex card loads count under LRS, with 20% TCS only above ₹10 lakh a year. Tour packages pay a flat 2% from 1 April 2026.
  • No UPI in Thailand, and PromptPay needs a Thai bank. Keep your Indian SIM in for OTPs and add a data eSIM for maps and Grab.

The officer at the Suvarnabhumi desk looks at your passport, then at you, and asks how much money you are carrying. Most Indian travellers have the answer on a forex card. The rule asks for cash. Since Thailand moved Indians to a 30-day visa-free stay on 15 September 2026, that small gap is worth closing before you leave home.

Here is how to split your money between cash, card and phone for a Thailand trip from India.

How much cash do you need to show at Thai immigration?

Thai embassy advice for the new 30-day visa-free scheme, as reported by Khaleej Times, lists at least 20,000 baht in cash per passenger, alongside a passport valid six months, a confirmed return ticket, hotel bookings and the Thailand Digital Arrival Card filled in within 72 hours before arrival. Each person in a group carries their own documents.

Not every traveller is asked, but the ones who are cannot show a forex card balance instead. Buy the baht in India, or buy US dollars and change them at a reputable booth on arrival, and keep the full amount together until you are through.

How much foreign currency can you take from India?

Under RBI rules, an authorised bank or money changer sells you up to US$3,000 in foreign currency notes per trip for most countries, Thailand included. Anything above that goes on a forex card. On the Thai side there is no limit, but you must declare foreign currency above US$20,000 at customs. When you come home you can keep up to US$2,000 in notes or on the card for your next trip.

So 20,000 baht, roughly US$600, fits easily inside the cash allowance. Two people need 40,000 baht between them.

Forex card, credit card or cash: which is cheapest to use?

Forex card loaded in THB or USDMost spending, ATM top-upsCounts under LRS; ATM fee in Thailand
Indian credit cardHotels, malls, backupAbout 2% to 3.5% forex markup plus 18% GST on the markup

Two rules save more money than any card choice. When a terminal or ATM offers to charge you in rupees, refuse and pay in baht: that conversion can push the total cost of a swipe past 10%. And withdraw larger amounts less often, since the Thai ATM fee is per withdrawal; AEON machines inside Big C and Lotus's have been charging less.

What TCS will you pay in 2026?

Loading a forex card is a remittance under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme. TCS of 20% applies only to the part above ₹10 lakh in a financial year, counted across all your LRS spending, so a normal Thailand holiday pays none. Overseas tour packages are different: from 1 April 2026 they carry a flat 2% TCS from the first rupee. TCS is credited against your income tax, so claim it when you file.

Can you pay with UPI or QR codes in Thailand?

No. Thailand is not on the 2026 lists of countries where UPI pays merchants, and PromptPay codes, which you will see everywhere, are linked to Thai bank accounts. Tourists with foreign cards generally cannot pay them. Fizen QR Pay does not work in Thailand either; it covers Vietnam and the Philippines. For Thailand, cash and cards are the honest answer.

How should your phone be set up?

Your Indian bank sends the OTP for every card payment and forex card reload to your Indian number, by SMS. Keep that SIM in the phone with roaming on for SMS, and put your data on a travel eSIM so you are not paying roaming for maps, Grab and Bolt.

Fizen's Thailand eSIMs, checked on 26 October 2026, run on TrueMove H 4G and 5G for the country plans, including unlimited plans at speeds up to 10 Mbps, and on AIS 5G in the Asia regional plans, where speed drops to 128 kbps after the data allowance. A regional plan suits a trip that continues to Vietnam or Malaysia. Most plans cannot be topped up, so size for the full stay.

Install it at home on Wi-Fi so it is live when you land. If a covered fault on Fizen's side stops it working, a real person helps and you get a free replacement for the length of the trip under the Trip Guarantee. Changed plans? An unused, not-yet-installed eSIM can usually be taken back; eligibility depends on the plan, check Package details or ask chat.

What does a well-packed wallet look like?

20,000 baht in an envelope until immigration, a forex card for the week, a credit card at the bottom of the bag, and data running before the aircraft doors open. You pay for pad kra pao at the night market in cash and the hotel on the card, and nothing surprises you on the statement.
