Internet in Thailand (2026): What a Two-Week Family Trip Really Costs in Data
Two adults, two kids, fourteen days, one van with a tablet in the back seat. Here is what that actually costs in data, which Thai network you land on, and when the airport SIM is the better buy.
Quick answer: For the family of four doing two weeks in Thailand: Bangkok, the north, then an island. The Thailand country plan roams on TrueMove H on 4G and 5G. On 23 September 2026, 10 GB for 7 days was US$12.87, about US$1.29 per GB and US$1.84 a day, and unlimited for 15 days was US$39.91, about US$2.66 a day, at up to 10 Mbps. If the kids watch video in the van, buy unlimited.
Key takeaways
- The pain is not signal, it is the back seat. Two children streaming standard-definition video for an hour each adds roughly 1 GB to a day that would otherwise cost you well under half of that.
- Which network you get depends on which plan you buy. The Thailand country plan roams on TrueMove H on 4G and 5G. The South-Eastern Asia regional plan, 18 countries, roams on AIS on 5G and slows to 128 kbps once the bucket is gone.
- Prices on 23 September 2026: 10 GB for 7 days, US$12.87, about US$1.29 per GB. Unlimited for 15 days, US$39.91, about US$2.66 a day, capped at up to 10 Mbps.
- Coverage is a carrier claim, not a promise. True states 5G across 99% of the population of Bangkok and its metropolitan area and 90% nationwide. AIS states 95% of the population. Neither figure says anything about a ferry crossing.
Which network you get, and what it really costs
In Thailand the Fizen eSIM roams on AIS (5G). This is a Thailand-only plan. At 128 kbps you can still send messages and load map tiles, but not hold a video call. Unlimited plans run at up to 10 Mbps, which is enough for calls and 720p video.

Prices and carrier read from the Fizen catalogue on 23 September 2026. Data only, no calls or SMS.
Prices are before the welcome credit. A new user who opens the eSIM tab in the Fizen app for the first time gets US$10 of eSIM credit automatically, with no code, valid for 12 months. The app shows how much of it comes off your order. Paying by card on the web works too, but the credit only applies in the app.
This guide is written for one traveller in particular: the family of four on a two-week trip, Bangkok first, then somewhere north, then an island before the flight home. Everyone else is welcome, but the numbers below are sized for you.
Which network does a Thailand eSIM roam on, and how fast is it?
It depends which plan you buy, and this is the part most guides skip.
- The Thailand country plan roams on TrueMove H, on 4G and 5G. The unlimited version states a ceiling of up to 10 Mbps: unlimited in volume, capped in speed. The fixed 3 GB and 10 GB packages state no throttle speed at all, so treat the bucket as the whole plan and do not assume a slow line continues after it.
- The South-Eastern Asia regional plan roams on AIS, on 5G, and covers 18 countries. It slows to 128 kbps once the high-speed data is used.
Those two speeds do very different things, and for a family the difference decides whether the evening call home works.
One more thing about 10 Mbps: it is shared. If you hotspot the tablets from one phone, every device is drawing on that same ceiling. Two video streams and a video call through a single hotspot will each get noticeably less.
What does mobile data in Thailand cost per day and per gigabyte?
All figures read from the Fizen catalogue on 23 September 2026. Country rows are TrueMove H, regional rows are AIS across 18 countries. These move, so check before you buy.
| Plan | Days | Total | Per day | Per GB |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 GB, TrueMove H | 7 | US$12.87 | US$1.84 | US$1.29 |
| 3 GB, TrueMove H | 3 | US$9.18 | US$3.06 | US$3.06 |
| Unlimited, TrueMove H, up to 10 Mbps | 7 | US$21.95 | US$3.14 | not applicable |
| Unlimited, TrueMove H, up to 10 Mbps | 15 | US$39.91 | US$2.66 | not applicable |
| Unlimited, TrueMove H, up to 10 Mbps | 30 | US$62.64 | US$2.09 | not applicable |
| 10 GB, AIS, 18 countries | 15 | US$24.55 | US$1.64 | US$2.46 |
| 20 GB, AIS, 18 countries | 15 | US$39.00 | US$2.60 | US$1.95 |
How much data does a family of four use in a day in Thailand?

Apps publish their needs in megabits per second. One Mbps sustained for one hour is about 0.45 GB, which is how the video rows below are worked out. The call figures are Zoom's own published numbers; the streaming rows are an estimate at about 1 Mbps for standard-definition video, not a carrier or platform figure.
| If this is your family | Buy | Total on 23 Sep 2026 | Per day |
|---|---|---|---|
| 14 days, video strictly on hotel Wi-Fi | 10 GB for 7 days, twice | US$25.74 | US$1.84 |
| 14 days, tablets running on the road | Unlimited for 15 days | US$39.91 | US$2.66 |
| A week in Bangkok only, light use | 10 GB for 7 days | US$12.87 | US$1.84 |
| 14 days, and you cross into Vietnam or Cambodia | 20 GB for 15 days, 18 countries | US$39.00 | US$2.60 |
Is coverage a problem outside Bangkok, in the north or on the islands?
- Ferry crossings. This is the real dead zone on an island leg: Surat Thani to Samui, Phuket to Phi Phi, Krabi to Lanta. Nothing in a 95% population figure covers open water. Download the ticket, the hotel address and an offline map before you board.
- The northern loop. The mountain roads around Pai and Mae Hong Son drop in and out. Plan the route offline rather than trusting a live reroute.
- Smaller islands and remote beaches. We could not open an official AIS or TrueMove H coverage map, so this guide names no island winner. If signal at one specific beach matters, check a crowd-sourced map such as nPerf or CellMapper before you commit, and treat crowd-sourced data as an indication rather than a carrier promise.
- Heavy monsoon rain. Bangkok floods in the wet season, and a downloaded route is worth more than any plan upgrade on those days.
Should we just buy tourist SIMs at the airport instead?
What that price does not include is the process, and for a family of four you go through it four times, or you accept that only one phone has data.
- Since 18 August 2025 the NBTC has required real-time biometric liveness detection for SIM registration: a live photo or video check with a blink or a stillness test. A photograph of a face does not pass. Non-Thais register with an original passport.
- A law published in the Royal Gazette on 29 August 2025 limits foreign nationals to three SIMs per operator, and sets tourist SIM validity at a maximum of 60 days with no extension.
- Children under the age you are comfortable handing a passport to are not registering anything, so their tablet is on your hotspot either way.
If you plan to stream on the move rather than just stay reachable, the uncapped local line is the faster of the two, and that is the trade you are making for the counter and the camera.

- Rules change, so check before you travel. SIM registration rules, arrival card requirements and entry rules are set by the Thai authorities and change. Submit the Thailand Digital Arrival Card only at the official immigration site, and check official sources before relying on anything here.
- Data only. A travel eSIM carries data. It does not give you a Thai phone number and it does not send or receive SMS, so keep your home SIM active for bank one-time codes and calls. Fizen's QR Pay is not available in Thailand.
- Prices and estimates. Plan prices, validity, data size and throttle speed are the ones shown at checkout on the date given. Data-use figures are approximations derived from published bandwidth numbers and your real use will differ. Real speed depends on the network and where you are. Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked, and most travel eSIMs cannot be topped up.
