There is no short country plan, so a one-week visitor is on the regional plan whether they wanted the flexibility or not.

How different is coverage in Kuala Lumpur and in Borneo?
Very, and for once there are published per-state numbers rather than vague reassurance.
- The peninsula leg is effectively solved. Kuala Lumpur, Penang and the corridor between them are among the best-covered places in the region. Grab, maps and video calls are not going to be your problem.
- Borneo is a different network experience, and the gap between roughly 99% and roughly 60% is not a rounding difference. Kota Kinabalu and the main towns are fine. The Kinabatangan river, the jungle lodges, the roads between them and the smaller islands off Semporna are where you should assume nothing.
- Populated areas is the key phrase. A national park, a river and a dive site are not populated areas, and no coverage percentage is describing them.
- The fix is free and takes ten minutes: download offline maps for Sabah before you leave Kuala Lumpur, save your lodge's pickup details as a screenshot, and turn off photo backup over mobile data.
How much data does a KL and Borneo fortnight use?
