Using Revolut in Vietnam (2026): ATMs, QR Codes and Where It Stops Working
Revolut is one of the easiest cards to bring to Vietnam, until a noodle stall hands you a QR code. What works, what it costs at the ATM, and the one place it cannot follow you.
Quick answer: Revolut works in Vietnam wherever a card terminal or ATM takes Visa or Mastercard, and its own Vietnam page lists free ATM withdrawals up to a monthly allowance that depends on your plan, then a 2% fair usage fee. What it cannot do is pay the VietQR codes that most street vendors, cafes and small shops show, because VietQR is built for Vietnamese bank accounts.
Key takeaways
- Cards and ATMs work. Revolut pays at card terminals and withdraws from ATMs in Vietnam like any Visa or Mastercard.
- The free ATM allowance is per plan. Revolut's Vietnam page lists five withdrawals or £200 a rolling month on Standard, up to £2,000 on Ultra, then a 2% fair usage fee.
- The local bank charges too. Most Vietnamese ATMs add their own fee per withdrawal, often around 50,000 dong, and cap each withdrawal at 3 to 5 million dong, more at VPBank.
- VietQR is the gap. The national QR standard runs on Vietnamese bank accounts through NAPAS, so a Revolut card cannot scan it.
Revolut is one of the easiest cards to land in Vietnam with. It works at hotels, malls, supermarkets and ATMs without much thought. The trouble starts at the places that make Vietnam worth visiting: the pho stall, the coffee cart, the market, the small guesthouse. Those increasingly do not take cards at all. They hand you a QR code.
Where does Revolut work in Vietnam?
Anywhere a terminal accepts Visa or Mastercard: hotels, chain restaurants, convenience stores like Circle K and FamilyMart, supermarkets, malls, Grab rides paid by card, and airlines. Tap to pay works where the terminal supports contactless.
When a terminal or an ATM offers to charge you in your home currency instead of dong, decline it. Revolut's own Vietnam guidance is to choose the local currency, which avoids the dynamic currency conversion margin the machine adds.
What does a Revolut ATM withdrawal in Vietnam cost?
There are two fees to keep apart. The first is Revolut's own. Its Vietnam ATM page lists a fee-free allowance per rolling month by plan, after which a 2% fair usage fee applies:
| Revolut plan | Fee-free ATM allowance per rolling month |
|---|---|
| Standard | £200 or 5 withdrawals |
| Plus | £200 |
| Premium | £400 |
| Metal | £800 |
| Ultra | £2,000 |
These are the UK figures on Revolut's site; allowances differ by country, so check the limits screen in your own app. The second fee belongs to the Vietnamese bank that owns the ATM, and Revolut cannot waive it.
Which Vietnamese ATMs charge a foreign card, and how much?
Most bank ATMs in Vietnam charge a foreign card a flat fee per withdrawal and cap the amount low. Travel money guides in 2025 and 2026 report:
- A flat fee of about 50,000 to 55,000 dong per withdrawal at most banks, with a cap of 3 to 5 million dong each time.
- VPBank is the one most often reported as charging no fee for foreign cards, with a higher cap of up to 10 million dong.
- TPBank stopped free withdrawals for foreign cards on 21 June 2025, according to YOU's Vietnam ATM guide.
Because the fee is usually flat, one large withdrawal costs less than three small ones. Fees change without notice and some machines do not display them, so read the screen before you confirm.
Can you pay a VietQR code with Revolut?
No. VietQR is Vietnam's national QR standard, built by NAPAS with the country's banks, and paying a VietQR code moves money from a Vietnamese bank account or a local wallet. A Revolut card is not one of those, and Revolut's app cannot scan the code.
There are partial workarounds. Sacombank's VIETQRGlobal lets international visitors pay at merchants in its network, and some merchants also display Alipay+ codes that accept foreign wallets. Neither covers the ordinary VietQR sticker on most stalls.
So what should you carry?
- Revolut for the card economy: hotels, chains, supermarkets, rides and big purchases.
- Some dong in cash from one large ATM withdrawal at a low-fee bank, for the places that take neither card nor QR.
- A way to pay VietQR for the stalls and cafes that only show a code. Fizen QR Pay lets a foreign visitor scan the local code and pay from a USDT balance, with the amount shown in dong before you confirm.
Frequently asked questions
Does Revolut work in Vietnam?
Yes, at card terminals and ATMs that accept Visa or Mastercard. It does not work with VietQR codes, which need a Vietnamese bank account or local wallet.
Is it free to withdraw cash with Revolut in Vietnam?
Only within your plan's monthly fee-free allowance, then a 2% fair usage fee applies. The Vietnamese bank that owns the ATM usually adds its own fee as well.
Which ATM in Vietnam is cheapest for a foreign card?
VPBank is the bank most often reported as charging no fee for foreign cards, but policies change. Check the fee on the screen before you confirm.
Should I pay in dong or in my home currency?
In dong. Choosing your home currency lets the terminal or ATM apply its own conversion margin.
Can I scan VietQR with Revolut?
No. Revolut cannot pay VietQR codes. Carry cash or use an app built for foreign visitors to pay local QR codes.
Pay the QR codes your card cannot
QR Pay lives in the Fizen app and works for foreign travellers in Vietnam and the Philippines. Scan the local QR code, see the amount in dong, and confirm from your USDT balance.
