Where to Spend New Year's Eve 2026 in Asia: 6 Cities Checked
Six cities, six very different midnights. What actually happened last New Year's Eve in Taipei, Seoul, Singapore, Bangkok, Tokyo and Hong Kong, what is confirmed for 2026, and how to hop between them without losing signal.
Quick answer: For fireworks, Taipei 101 and Singapore's Marina Bay are the safest bets: both ran their shows on 31 December 2025, a six-minute display from Taipei 101 and a 30-minute show building to midnight at Marina Bay. Seoul rings the Bosingak bell 33 times at midnight, Bangkok's riverside countdown is centred on ICONSIAM, and Tokyo is quiet, with temple bells and a first shrine visit. Hong Kong cancelled its harbour fireworks last year after the Tai Po fire, so wait for its 2026 announcement before you book for them.
Key takeaways
- Taipei and Singapore are the reliable fireworks: both held full shows on 31 December 2025.
- Seoul is a bell, not a party: 33 tolls at Bosingak, in temperatures around -3C, with a fireworks countdown at DDP.
- Tokyo is the quiet option: temple bells, soba and shrines, plus the New Year closures from 29 December.
- Hong Kong is the open question: no harbour fireworks last year, and no 2026 plan announced when we checked.
You booked Hong Kong for New Year's Eve 2025 for the harbour fireworks, and two weeks before the night they were cancelled. A countdown is the one part of a trip you cannot move, so it is worth knowing which cities actually delivered last year and which are still unconfirmed. Here are six Asian midnights, checked against what happened on 31 December 2025, with the entry rules and connectivity that matter if you are hopping between them.
Which Asian cities have the best New Year's Eve countdown?
| City | The midnight moment | Last year (31 Dec 2025) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Taipei | Fireworks from Taipei 101, about six minutes | Held | One big, classic skyline show |
| Singapore | Marina Bay fireworks building to midnight; 10-minute shows on Sentosa | Held | Warm night, easy crowds, families |
| Seoul | Bosingak bell, 33 tolls; fireworks at DDP | Held | Tradition, if you can take the cold |
| Bangkok | Riverside countdown at ICONSIAM on the Chao Phraya | Annual event | River views and a party atmosphere |
| Tokyo | Temple bells and the first shrine visit | Quiet by design | A calm, local New Year |
| Hong Kong | Harbour fireworks cancelled; light show and concert in Central | No fireworks | Wait for the 2026 announcement |
Taipei: is the Taipei 101 fireworks show on in 2026?
It is an annual fixture, and last year's ran for six minutes at midnight, set to original music by young Taiwanese artists and broadcast worldwide. The 2026 programme was not out when we checked. December in Taipei is mild and often damp, with lows around 16C, so a light jacket does. 25 December is a public holiday in Taiwan again, which makes Christmas a long weekend this year. Foreign visitors must file the free online Taiwan Arrival Card within three days before arrival.
Singapore: where do you watch the Marina Bay fireworks for free?
The Marina Bay Singapore Countdown ends with a fireworks display of about 30 minutes leading up to midnight. Free spots that fill early include Merlion Park, Esplanade Park and Queen Elizabeth Walk, Bay East Garden and Marina Barrage, where people picnic from the afternoon. Sentosa runs its own 10-minute shows at midnight on Siloso and Palawan beaches. It is the warmest of the six, and the easiest with children.
Seoul: what is the Bosingak bell ceremony?
At midnight the bell at Bosingak, in Jongno, is struck 33 times. Last year the city ran the ceremony from 11pm on 31 December to 12:20am, with projections on the pavilion roof, while DDP held a countdown with DJs and fireworks. Seoul's normal December low is about -3C, so dress for standing still in the cold for an hour. If you arrive on or after 1 January 2027, check the K-ETA rule: the exemption for 22 countries and regions runs until 31 December 2026.
Bangkok and Tokyo: party or quiet?
Bangkok counts down on the Chao Phraya. ICONSIAM has staged its riverside countdown for years, with fireworks along about 1.4 km of the river; check the 2026 programme in December, and book a riverside restaurant or a boat early. Since 15 September 2026 tourists from 60 countries and territories get 30 days visa-free, down from 60, so check your stay length if Bangkok is one stop of several.
Tokyo does New Year the Japanese way. There is no city fireworks show to plan around; instead, eat toshikoshi soba in the evening, listen for temple bells around midnight, then join the crowds for hatsumode, the first shrine visit, at Meiji Jingu. Be ready for the shutdown: government offices close from 29 December to 3 January and many small restaurants close too, so withdraw cash by 30 December.
Hong Kong: will there be harbour fireworks on 31 December 2026?
Unknown at the time of writing. Last year the tourism board cancelled the Victoria Harbour fireworks after the Wang Fuk Court fire in Tai Po, the city's deadliest blaze since 1948, and held a concert in Central with a three-minute light show on eight landmark buildings at midnight. Hong Kong has cancelled fireworks after tragedies before. If the harbour show is the reason for your trip, book refundable until it is announced.
How do you stay online when you hop between countries?
Buy and install a travel eSIM at home on Wi-Fi, keep your home SIM on for bank SMS codes, and switch the travel line on after landing. At midnight itself, tens of thousands of phones in one square slow every network, so send your meeting point before 11pm and download an offline map of the area.
If your trip takes in more than one country, the Fizen Asia regional eSIM covers 18 countries on one install, including Japan on NTT DoCoMo, South Korea on SK Telecom, Taiwan on Chunghwa Telecom, Thailand on AIS, Singapore on StarHub and Hong Kong on 3, all listed with 5G (catalog checked 25 October 2026). Plans run from 1 GB for 3 days to 50 GB for 30 days and slow to 128 kbps once the data is used. Most plans cannot be topped up, and more data means a new eSIM, so for two weeks across three cities, 10 GB or 20 GB for 15 days is the safer size. Staying in one country? Its country plan is usually the better fit; see our regional eSIM guide.
If a verified fault on Fizen's side stops the eSIM working, you get a free 1-for-1 replacement for the length of the trip, or a refund for the days you could not use, handled by a real person in chat. Changed plans? An unused, not-yet-installed eSIM can usually be taken back; eligibility depends on the plan, check Package details or ask chat.
The honest alternative: if you spend the whole trip in one city and want a local number, a tourist SIM from the airport is the better buy. New to the app? New users get US$10 of eSIM credit in the Fizen app's eSIM tab.
With that sorted, the night looks like it should: the fireworks over the skyline, and your group found by text before the crowd closes in.
