Best eSIM for Bangkok (2026): TrueMove H Coverage, Real Prices and the Face-Scan Rule

Quick answer: For the traveller doing two weeks in Thailand, starting in Bangkok and finishing on an island. The Thailand country plan roams on TrueMove H on 4G and 5G.

Key takeaways

  • Carrier and networks: the Thailand country plan roams on TrueMove H (4G and 5G). The multi-country alternative is the South-Eastern Asia plan covering 18 countries, which roams on AIS (5G) and costs more for Thailand alone.
  • Dated prices (23 September 2026): 10 GB for 7 days US$12.87 (US$1.84 a day, US$1.29 per GB), 3 GB for 3 days US$9.18 (US$3.06 per GB), unlimited for 7 days US$21.95 (US$3.14 a day), unlimited for 15 days US$39.91 (US$2.66 a day).
  • Unlimited here means up to 10 Mbps. That carries a 1080p video call comfortably. A 1080p livestream at YouTube's recommended 10 Mbps would use the entire ceiling.
  • Buying a local SIM now involves a face scan. Since 18 August 2025 the NBTC has required real-time liveness detection at registration, and foreigners must present a passport.

The trip this is written for is the classic one: a few days in Bangkok, then a flight or a ferry to Samui, Phuket or Krabi. The sentence the reader says out loud, usually on day two, is "I burned through my data in Bangkok and then had no signal on the boat."

Does a Bangkok eSIM roam on TrueMove H or AIS?

TrueMove H, on 4G and 5G, if you buy the Thailand country plan. If you buy the South-Eastern Asia regional plan, which covers 18 countries, you roam on AIS (5G) instead. Both are top-tier Thai networks, and the choice should come down to whether Thailand is your only stop, because the country plan is materially better value for Thailand alone.

  • Thailand unlimited (TrueMove H) states a ceiling of up to 10 Mbps. It is unlimited in volume, capped in speed.
  • Thailand fixed plans (TrueMove H), the 3 GB and 10 GB packages, state no throttle speed at all. Do not assume a slow connection continues after the bucket is gone. Treat the bucket as the plan.
  • Regional plans (AIS) state a throttle of 128 kbps after the high-speed bucket, which keeps messaging and map tiles alive but not video.

What does a Bangkok eSIM cost per day and per gigabyte?

Priced on 23 September 2026. The Thailand country plans are TrueMove H, the regional rows are AIS across 18 countries.

How much data does a Bangkok trip really use?

A day in BangkokRough data
Maps plus a ride app opened repeatedly in traffic0.25 to 0.4 GB
Messaging, email, photos sent home0.2 to 0.3 GB
Translation, menus, browsing, some social0.3 to 0.5 GB
One hour of 720p video calls, one to oneAbout 1.1 GB
Typical Bangkok day, no video callsAbout 0.9 to 1.2 GB
Island day: fewer ride apps, more photos and videoAbout 0.6 to 1 GB

Is coverage actually a problem in Bangkok, or on the islands?

  • The BTS and MRT. The BTS runs on elevated track and the MRT runs underground. Neither the operators nor the regulator publish in-tunnel mobile coverage figures that we could verify, so treat any confident claim about underground signal, from anyone, as unverified.
  • Ferries and open water. This is the real dead zone on an island trip. Nationwide population coverage says nothing about the crossing between Samui and Phangan, or Phuket and Phi Phi. Download your ticket, your accommodation address and an offline map before you board.
  • Islands and remote beaches. We could not open an official AIS or TrueMove H coverage map, so this guide names no island winner. If coverage at a specific beach matters to you, check a crowd-sourced map such as nPerf or CellMapper before you commit, and remember that crowd-sourced data is not a carrier guarantee.
  • The rainy season. Bangkok floods in heavy monsoon rain, and low-lying riverside areas are the most affected. Offline maps and a downloaded route are worth more than any plan upgrade on those days.

  • Rules change, so check before you travel. SIM registration rules, arrival card requirements and entry rules are set by the Thai authorities and change. Submit the Thailand Digital Arrival Card only at the official immigration site, and check official sources before relying on anything here.
  • Data only. A travel eSIM carries data. It does not give you a local phone number and it does not send or receive SMS, so keep your home SIM active for bank one-time codes and calls. Fizen's QR Pay is not available in Thailand.
  • eSIM terms. Prices, validity, data size, throttle speed and hotspot rules are the ones shown at checkout. Real speed depends on the network and where you are. Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. Most travel eSIMs cannot be topped up, so more data means a new eSIM.
