# Is the Wise Card Accepted in Vietnam? Where It Works, Where VietQR Wins, and the ATM Allowance Catch (2026)

- Description: Wise works in Vietnam the way any Visa or Mastercard debit card does: fine at a terminal, useless at the QR code taped to the noodle stall. Here is where it earns its place, where it does not, and what travellers in September 2026 said about the fees.

**Quick answer:** Yes, a Wise card works in Vietnam wherever there is a card terminal: hotels, bigger and tourist restaurants, supermarkets and ATMs, converting to dong automatically. It cannot pay the VietQR codes that cafes, street stalls, markets and homestays display, because those are bank-to-bank transfer codes, not card payments. Expect a 3 to 5% card surcharge at many places (travellers, September 2026) and a limited free ATM allowance.

**Key takeaways**

- **A Wise card is a Visa or Mastercard debit card.** It works at terminals, not at VietQR codes, which move money between Vietnamese bank accounts.
- **Surcharges eat the saving.** Travellers in September 2026 reported 3 to 5% added for card payments at many places.
- **The free ATM allowance is small.** Wise's UK fee page shows 250 pounds a month free, then 2.69% on the rest (checked 2 November 2026); posters on other plans cited US$200 and NZ$350.
- **For the QR counters, visitors need a QR payer.** Fizen QR Pay pays VietQR, VNPay, MoMo and ZaloPay codes of Vietnamese account holders from USDT.

Six weeks in Vietnam, a Wise card that worked from Lisbon to Lima, and a question a New Zealand traveller asked in a Hanoi forum in September 2026: will vendors and places to eat take it? Twenty-four replies later the answer was clear, and it was not quite yes or no.

This post is about spending with the Wise card on the ground in Vietnam. If you are looking at Wise for sending money home or getting paid, see our [Wise alternative in Vietnam](https://blog.fizen.io/wise-alternative-vietnam-2026/) post instead.

## Where does a Wise card work in Vietnam?

Anywhere a Visa or Mastercard terminal is on the counter, which in practice means the higher end. One UK regular said only the more expensive tourist restaurants and one hotel took cards on their trip; a Hoi An resident said she uses hers a lot. Both are right: it depends on where you eat and sleep.

| Where you pay | Wise card | VietQR code | Cash |
| -------------------------------- | ------------------------------- | ---------------- | ------ |
| Hotel, resort, bigger restaurant | Usually, often with a surcharge | Sometimes | Yes |
| Cafe, bakery, small restaurant | Sometimes | Very common | Yes |
| Street stall, market, homestay | Rarely | Common in cities | Always |
| ATM | Yes, within your allowance | No | n/a |
| Tour operator transfer | Card if offered | Bank transfer | Yes |

You do not need to load dong first. A traveller confirmed the card converts from your home currency automatically; you can convert in the app ahead of time if you want to lock a rate.

## Why can't a Wise card pay a VietQR code?

Because VietQR is not a card network. It is NAPAS's account-to-account transfer service: you scan the code from a Vietnamese bank app and money moves from one member bank account to another, around the clock. A card, Wise or any other, rides Visa or Mastercard and needs a terminal to authorise it.

A Mountain View regular put it well in the same thread: some cross-border apps do connect international payments to Vietnam's domestic QR system, but that is a different thing from tapping a Wise card. The Wise account itself can send dong by bank transfer, which is how one Hanoi tour company said many of its international clients pay their bookings. That works for a tour deposit, not for a bowl of pho at a street stall.

## What does the Wise card cost you in Vietnam?

- **Merchant surcharges.** Several travellers in September 2026 said 3 to 5% is often added for card payments, which they felt cancelled out the Wise exchange-rate benefit. Some places charge nothing; ask before you tap.
- **ATM withdrawals past the allowance.** On UK cards Wise shows 250 pounds a month free, then 2.69% on the amount above it, plus any fee the ATM bank adds (Wise fee page, checked 2 November 2026). Allowances differ by country and plan, so check yours.
- **The ATM's own fee.** Vietnamese banks charge foreign cards separately; our [Vietnam ATM guide](https://blog.fizen.io/vietnam-atm-foreign-card-tpbank-fee-which-atms-work-2026/) lists what travellers paid from December 2025 to May 2026.

## What do people who have done it say?

- **Treat it as a backup and an ATM card.** A UK couple used Wise mainly for withdrawals because many places in Vietnam and Cambodia asked for cash, even some hotels (September 2026).
- **Ask about the surcharge first.** A Bengaluru traveller found most vendors charge over 3% and say so the moment you ask.
- **Change cash in the city, not the countryside.** A Sapa expert warned against trying to exchange less common currencies out in the mountains.
- **Use a digital card for apps.** One Australian kept a separate Wise digital card just for Grab and transport apps for the whole trip.
- **QR is everywhere, but it can fail.** A Hoi An resident said even market stalls take QR, while another couple gave up on their QR app after roughly every third payment failed. Know why a payment fails before you rely on one.

## How do visitors pay the VietQR codes without a Vietnamese bank?

This is the gap the Wise card leaves, and the one Fizen QR Pay is built for. It is for visitors and foreigners in Vietnam; Vietnamese residents cannot use it in Vietnam. You scan the shop's own code, see the amount in dong, and confirm.

1. Create or import your Fizen wallet, which is non-custodial: you hold the keys.
2. Get USDT on Solana or BNB Chain into the wallet. Depositing on BNB Chain has no gas fee; on Solana you need a little SOL. USDT on another network, or another token, cannot be deposited into QR Pay, so use Swap and Bridge in the app first.
3. Deposit from the wallet into QR Pay. KYC applies per wallet and per device, so a new phone means KYC again.
4. Scan the VietQR, VNPay, MoMo or ZaloPay code, check the shop name and the amount in dong, and confirm.

The rules that decide whether it works: no bank link and no card, USDT on Solana or BNB Chain only. In Vietnam it pays QR codes of Vietnamese account holders, so a code linked to a foreigner's account will not go through. Limits are US$800 per payment and US$1,000 per week, with no daily limit. If a payment fails, the usual reasons are bank maintenance, an expired code or special characters in the payment message; if it shows processing, do not pay again. The Fizen wallet is self-custody; USDT you move into QR Pay is governed by the QR Pay Terms, so only move in what you plan to spend. Steps: the [QR Pay getting started guide](https://docs.fizen.io/help-center/fizen-qr-pay/getting-started?ref=blog.fizen.io).

## So what should you carry?

The split most regulars land on: the Wise card for the hotel and the bigger dinners, a QR payer for the cafes and counters that show a code, and dong for stalls, tips and the countryside. Every QR payment is cash you did not withdraw, which keeps you inside the Wise ATM allowance for longer.

QR payments need working data at the counter. The same Fizen app sells a travel eSIM, data-only, payable with USDT or by card, and new users find a US$10 eSIM credit waiting in the eSIM tab, taken off at checkout (up to 30% of each plan), no code needed.

The picture afterwards: the hotel goes on the Wise card, the banh mi and the coffee go on QR, and you fly home with an ATM allowance you barely touched.

## Frequently asked questions

#### Is the Wise card widely accepted in Vietnam?

At card terminals, yes: hotels, bigger restaurants, supermarkets and ATMs. Many small places are cash or QR only, and travellers in September 2026 said a 3 to 5% card surcharge is common.

#### Can I pay VietQR codes with my Wise card?

No. VietQR codes are bank-to-bank transfers between Vietnamese accounts, not card payments. Visitors can pay them with a QR payer such as Fizen QR Pay, funded with USDT on Solana or BNB Chain.

#### Do I need to load Vietnamese dong on my Wise card?

No. The card converts from your home currency automatically. You can convert in the app in advance if you want to lock a rate.

#### How much can I withdraw from an ATM with Wise for free?

It depends on your country and plan. On UK cards, Wise shows 250 pounds a month free, then 2.69% above that (checked 2 November 2026). The Vietnamese ATM may add its own fee.

#### Can I pay a Vietnamese tour company with Wise?

Often yes, by bank transfer in dong from your Wise account to the company's Vietnamese account. One Hanoi tour company said many international clients pay this way.

#### Can Vietnamese residents use Fizen QR Pay?

Not in Vietnam. QR Pay is for cross-border use by visitors and foreigners. Residents of Vietnam can use it when they travel to the Philippines.
