- Description: Vietnam's taxi scams come down to six patterns: the fake ride-hail driver at the airport, the lookalike taxi, the meter that runs fast, the switched banknote, the motorbike ride that turns into a tour, and the off-app pickup. Real 2025 and 2026 cases, the tell-tale signs and what to do.

**Quick answer:** As of November 2026, the taxi scams in Vietnam reported most are fake ride-hail drivers who approach you at the airport (a Noi Bai case in June 2025 charged VND 900,000 for a ride that costs about VND 367,000), meters that run fast or a fare demanded at the door (a Tan Son Nhat driver charged nearly VND 3 million in August 2026), and motorbike drivers who detour and multiply the fare (VND 1 million for a 7 km Hanoi ride, February 2026). Book in the app yourself, match the plate before you get in, and pay the app fare without handing over big notes.

**Key takeaways**

- **Never take a ride that finds you.** Book Grab, Be or Xanh SM yourself and get into the car or bike whose plate and name match the app.
- **Check the phone number on a street taxi.** Real Mai Linh cars show 1055 and Vinasun shows 028 38 27 27 27; a different number means a lookalike.
- **Agree the price before a motorbike moves.** A Hanoi xe om driver had to refund a VND 1 million fare in February 2026; the app price was about VND 50,000.
- **Pay without big notes.** In-app payment, small notes or a bank QR take away the banknote-switch trick.

You land at Noi Bai, your phone has no signal yet, and while you stand by the door trying to open Grab, a man in a green jacket says "Grab? Grab?" and points at a car. That is how one of the best-documented taxi scams in Vietnam starts, and it works because the visitor is offline and in a hurry.

Two things beat most of what follows: data the moment you land, so you book and price the ride yourself, and a way to pay the driver without fumbling through unfamiliar notes. The Fizen app does both for foreign visitors. [Get the Fizen app](https://link.fizen.io/s/B3Aenpj7fz?ref=blog.fizen.io) and your travel eSIM gift is waiting there: in a new Fizen programme, US$10 of eSIM credit comes off the bill automatically at checkout (up to 30% of each plan), payable with USDT or by card; in Vietnam the same app has QR Pay, which pays a driver's bank QR in dong from USDT.

## How does the fake Grab driver scam work at Vietnam's airports?

On 7 June 2025 a Taiwanese visitor booking a ride at Noi Bai was approached by a man wearing a ride-hail logo who promised a metered fare. At the hotel the driver showed a fake fare app reading VND 700,000 and added a VND 200,000 "parking fee"; the normal trip is about VND 350,000 plus a VND 17,000 toll. Police identified the couple behind it on 22 June. In Ho Chi Minh City, police said on 29 August 2026 that a taxi driver had charged an Indonesian visitor nearly VND 3 million for a 30-minute ride from Tan Son Nhat and locked the doors when she objected; he was made to refund her.

**Tell-tale sign:** the driver approaches you, or walks you to a car park. **What to do:** book yourself at the marked pickup point, check plate, model and name, and use the official taxi queue if you have no app.

## How do you spot a fake Mai Linh or Vinasun taxi?

Lookalike cabs copy the colours and logo of trusted firms. A vietnamtourism.com guide updated in September 2026 says the phone number painted on the car is the hardest thing to fake: Mai Linh (green and white) shows 1055, Vinasun (white with green and red stripes) 028 38 27 27 27\. Xanh SM's cyan electric cars have no meter; the fare is set in the app.

**Tell-tale sign:** a slightly wrong green, a blurry logo or a different hotline. **What to do:** check the number before you open the door, and photograph the plate and the driver's ID card on the dashboard.

## What is the fast meter trick?

The meter starts above the flag fall, jumps in big steps, or is "broken" so the driver names a price. Tripadvisor posters about Ho Chi Minh City still report drivers who refuse to switch the meter on or show a price on their phone instead.

**Tell-tale sign:** the meter is not reset in front of you, or runs far ahead of the app quote. **What to do:** screenshot the Grab or Xanh SM estimate first, watch the first minute, and if the total is far above it, pay, keep the receipt and call the company hotline.

## How does the banknote switch work in taxis?

You hand over a VND 200,000 or 500,000 note, the driver palms it, shows you a VND 10,000 or 20,000 and says you underpaid. VnExpress reported on 5 January 2026 that a Nha Trang driver had been filmed swapping a South Korean visitor's VND 200,000 for a VND 10,000; police said he admitted it. Our [500,000 vs 20,000 dong guide](https://blog.fizen.io/vietnam-500000-vs-20000-dong-note-taxi-swap-2026/) shows the notes side by side.

**Tell-tale sign:** the driver takes the note low or out of sight. **What to do:** carry small notes, say the value aloud as you hand it over, keep big notes out of view.

## What are the xe om and motorbike taxi scams?

A street motorbike driver agrees a vague price, then turns the ride into a tour. On 24 February 2026 a Hanoi driver took an American visitor on a 7 km trip via Train Street and other stops and demanded VND 1 million, against a ride-hail price of about VND 50,000\. Police summoned him; he admitted altering the route and refunded her, Tuoi Tre reported.

**Tell-tale sign:** "no problem, cheap" instead of a number, or stops you did not ask for. **What to do:** use GrabBike, Be or Xanh SM Bike so the price is fixed, or agree an exact figure written on your phone before you sit down.

## Can a Grab ride be a scam?

The app is not the problem; the off-app ride is. A driver may cancel and offer to go "without the app" for cash, or claim the app price was wrong. Tripadvisor posters recommend checking that the plate matches and the driver's screen shows your destination. More on paying drivers in our [Grab payment methods guide](https://blog.fizen.io/grab-payment-methods-vietnam-2026/).

**Tell-tale sign:** "cancel, I take you cheaper". **What to do:** keep the ride in the app so price and route are recorded, and report problems there.

## What do people who have been there say?

- Ho Chi Minh City regulars on Tripadvisor say to queue for the established taxi firms at the airport and ignore anyone with a clipboard steering you outside the queue.
- Several posters say unbranded yellow and silver cabs caused most of their problems.
- Long-time visitors on the Vietnam forum agreed every xe om fare before getting on and rarely had trouble; ask your hotel what the fare should be.
- A Grab motorbike thread advises checking the plate and that the rider's phone shows your destination; licensed riders carry a spare helmet.

## How can a visitor pay a taxi driver without cash?

Pay in the app where you can. When the driver wants cash, ask "chuyen khoan duoc khong?" (can I transfer?): many drivers show a bank QR. Fizen QR Pay lets foreign visitors in Vietnam pay VietQR, VNPay, MoMo and ZaloPay codes from USDT, with the amount shown in dong before you confirm. It does not stop an overcharge you agree to, so check the fare first, but there are no notes to switch.

It is for visitors only: people who live in Vietnam cannot use it in Vietnam, and in Vietnam it pays only Vietnamese account holders' codes. The order: create or import your self-custody Fizen wallet, get USDT on Solana or BNB Chain into it, deposit from the wallet into QR Pay (no gas on BNB Chain, a little SOL on Solana; KYC per wallet and per device), then scan and pay. USDT on another network, or another token, cannot be deposited. Limits: US$800 per payment, US$1,000 per week, no daily limit. USDT moved into QR Pay is governed by the QR Pay Terms, so move in only what you plan to spend. Steps: [QR Pay getting started](https://docs.fizen.io/help-center/fizen-qr-pay/getting-started?ref=blog.fizen.io).

## Why does data on landing beat most taxi scams?

With your own connection at the kerb you book before anyone reaches you, see the price, follow the route and message the hotel. One option is Fizen's Asia plan, which, as of 2 November 2026, runs on Viettel Mobile 4G in Vietnam; fixed-data plans slow to 128 kbps after the allowance. Check the eSIM tab or [fizen.io/esim](https://link.fizen.io/s/1JldtJTRtO?ref=blog.fizen.io) for current Vietnam plans. A fault on Fizen's side gets a free 1:1 replacement for the whole trip from a real person in live chat. It is data only, so keep your home SIM on for bank codes.

## Frequently asked questions

Carry small notes, say the value out loud as you hand it over, and keep large notes out of sight, or pay in the app or by bank QR.
