# Vietnam eSIM With a Phone Number? Data-Only vs a Local Number, and When You Need One (2026)

- Description: A travel eSIM for Vietnam gives you data, not a Vietnamese number. When that is enough, what a registered local SIM involves after the April 2026 rules, and the few moments where a local number really matters: Grab codes, Zalo and banks.

**Quick answer:** As of 2 November 2026, Fizen's travel eSIM for Vietnam is data only: no Vietnamese number, no outgoing calls and no SMS. A local number needs a SIM or eSIM registered to your passport, and since 15 April 2026 new Vietnamese subscriptions are verified with a facial biometric check. Most visitors never need one, because Grab, maps and WhatsApp run on data, but Zalo and Vietnamese bank accounts are built around local numbers.

**Key takeaways**

- **A travel eSIM is data only.** It runs maps, Grab, WhatsApp and video calls, but it has no Vietnamese number to call or text from.
- **A local number means registration.** Original passport, and for new subscriptions since 15 April 2026 a facial biometric check under Circular 08/2026.
- **Changing phones triggers another check.** From 15 June 2026, a SIM moved to a new phone must be face-verified within two hours or outgoing calls and SMS stop.
- **Where a local number matters:** Zalo sign-up, a Vietnamese bank account and some phone-based services. Where it does not: Grab, maps, messaging, hotel booking.
- **Keep your home SIM.** Bank and airline codes from home still arrive on it, with roaming data off.

You are standing in a Hanoi homestay, the host says "send me a Zalo", and you realise your plan is a data eSIM with no phone number to give. Is that a problem? Usually not, but it is worth knowing the three or four places where a local number does matter before you decide.

This guide separates a data-only travel eSIM from a Vietnamese number, explains what registering a local SIM involves under the 2026 rules, and tells you when you can skip it. It pairs with our guide to [Grab and Vietnamese numbers](https://blog.fizen.io/grab-vietnam-foreign-phone-number-otp-esim-2026/) and with [keeping WhatsApp and bank codes on a travel eSIM](https://blog.fizen.io/keep-whatsapp-and-bank-otp-with-travel-esim-2026/).

## Can a Vietnam eSIM give you a local phone number?

A travel eSIM from Fizen cannot. It carries mobile data on Viettel Mobile 4G as of 2 November 2026, and nothing else: no calls, no SMS, no number. Local operators do sell eSIMs with a number. A Viettel eSIM guide on vietteldata.vn, which we could not confirm is run by Viettel, lists plans that include voice minutes, and it says the original physical passport is required and the phone must be network-unlocked. We could not verify whether you can buy and activate one before you land, so assume you cannot until the carrier says otherwise.

For "outgoing calls" on a travel trip, the practical answer is apps. WhatsApp, FaceTime and Zalo calls all run on the data connection, so a data-only eSIM covers most calling in practice.

## What are the rules for a local SIM or eSIM in 2026?

- **Passport registration.** Guides say it is a legal requirement and that unregistered SIMs from street vendors can be blocked after a few days.
- **Circular 08/2026.** In force since 15 April 2026\. Vietnam News reported on 13 April that foreigners who registered with a passport must re-authenticate within 60 days of that date.
- **Face check for new subscriptions.** VietNamNet reported on 15 June 2026 that new activations require facial biometric verification against national databases, with unverified lines suspended for outgoing calls and SMS first.
- **Phone changes.** From 15 June 2026, moving a SIM to a new handset triggers a face check within a maximum of two hours.

One thing we could not confirm: how a short-stay tourist completes the face check at a counter or in an operator app. No source we opened explains it. Ask the staff before you pay, and do not plan to swap the SIM between phones mid-trip.

## When do you actually need a Vietnamese number?

| Situation | Do you need a local number? | What to do instead |
| -------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------ |
| Grab | No. The code goes to the number you sign up with | Register at home, then use in-app chat with the driver |
| Maps, messaging, video calls | No | Data is enough |
| Zalo | Usually yes: sign-up is built around Vietnamese numbers | Use WhatsApp, or register Zalo with a local SIM |
| Vietnamese bank account | Yes, plus a passport and visa | Tourists rarely need one; see QR Pay below |
| Airport Wi-Fi | Often an SMS code | Skip it, you have data |
| Bank and airline codes from home | No, but your home SIM must stay on | Keep it in, with roaming data off |

On Zalo, a business guide says a Vietnamese number is required to register, and a foreign user's App Store review describes accounts disabled after failed attempts. On banks, an Expat.com thread says Vietnamese banks normally want a passport copy with a current visa, and that not every bank sends SMS or voice codes to foreign numbers.

## What do people who have done it say?

- Our Grab guide, which read Tripadvisor threads from Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi (we could not reopen them for this post), reports the same answer from regulars: sign up with your own number before you fly, then use data.
- Expats on Expat.com report that a prepaid Viettel SIM can stop working for apps such as WhatsApp about a month after you leave, even on Wi-Fi abroad, so do not count on it as a number you keep.
- The same threads say a friend registering a SIM for you in Vietnam is the usual workaround for keeping a number, which only matters if you plan to return.

## What is the simplest setup for a visitor?

Install a travel eSIM at home on Wi-Fi in the Fizen app. Keep your home SIM in, label the lines, make the eSIM your mobile data line with data roaming on, and turn data roaming off on the home line so codes still arrive without a roaming bill. If a Vietnamese number would help, say for a long stay or for Zalo, add a registered local SIM on top; the two work together. Fizen's Vietnam coverage, as of 2 November 2026, is the Asia plan for 18 countries on Viettel Mobile 4G, with fixed-data plans slowing to 128 kbps after the allowance. Check the eSIM tab or fizen.io/esim for current Vietnam plans, and see [how to choose a Vietnam eSIM](https://blog.fizen.io/best-travel-esim-vietnam-2026/). If you buy a local SIM at the airport, [check it before you leave the counter](https://blog.fizen.io/vietnam-airport-sim-stopped-working-2026/).

**Your travel eSIM gift is waiting: US$10 of eSIM credit.** It is exclusive to new Fizen app users, lands in the eSIM tab the moment you join, and saves you up to 30% on each data plan until it is used. Pay with USDT on Solana or BNB Chain, or by card via Stripe.

## How do you pay without a Vietnamese bank account?

QR Pay in the same app lets foreign visitors pay Vietnamese bank QR codes (VietQR, VNPay, MoMo, ZaloPay) from USDT on Solana or BNB Chain, up to US$800 a payment and US$1,000 a week. People who live in Vietnam cannot use it there, KYC applies per wallet and per device, and USDT moved in is governed by the QR Pay Terms, so move in only what you plan to spend. ## Frequently asked questions

#### Does a Vietnam eSIM come with a phone number?

A Fizen travel eSIM does not: it is data only. Local carriers sell eSIMs and SIMs with a number, but those require passport registration and, for new subscriptions since 15 April 2026, a facial check.

#### Can I make outgoing calls on a Vietnam eSIM?

Not as normal phone calls on a data-only eSIM. You can call over the internet with WhatsApp, FaceTime or Zalo, which run on the data connection.

#### Do I need a Vietnamese number for Grab?

No. Sign up at home with your own number, because the code goes to that number, and use in-app chat with the driver. See our Grab guide for the details.

#### Do I need a local number for Zalo?

Usually. Guides say Zalo registration is built around Vietnamese numbers, so use WhatsApp unless you have a registered local SIM.

#### Will my home bank codes still arrive in Vietnam?

Yes if your home SIM stays on, ideally with data roaming off. Check with your bank first, since some banks do not send codes to foreign numbers reliably.

#### Your travel eSIM gift is waiting: US$10 of eSIM credit

Exclusive to new Fizen app users: US$10 of eSIM credit lands in the eSIM tab the moment you join and saves you up to 30% on each data plan until it is used. Pay with USDT on Solana or BNB Chain, or by card via Stripe. Visitors in Vietnam can pay local bank QR codes in the same app with QR Pay.
