# 500,000 vs 20,000 Dong: The Blue-Note Mix-Up and the Taxi Note-Switch Trick (2026)

- Description: Two blue notes, one worth 25 times the other, handed over in a dark taxi. How the 500,000 and 20,000 dong mix-up happens, how drivers use it, and the habits that make it impossible.

**Quick answer:** The 500,000 dong note is a light cyan-blue and the 20,000 is a medium blue, so in a dark taxi they are easy to confuse, and some drivers exploit it by palming your 500,000, showing you a 20,000 and saying you underpaid. Break big notes at a convenience store, keep them out of sight in taxis, check the length and the zeros, and pay by app or QR where you can.

**Key takeaways**

- **Check the length, not the colour.** The 500,000 note is 152 mm long, the 20,000 is 136 mm, per a Vietnam tourism guide updated in September 2026.
- **The swap is documented.** A June 2024 investigation by Ho Chi Minh City's Phap Luat newspaper reported unlicensed taxis swapping a passenger's 500,000 note for a 20,000 and demanding more, often with foreign tourists.
- **Never show a 500,000 in a cab.** Break it first by buying water at Circle K or 7-Eleven.
- **No notes, no swap.** App fares and QR payments put the amount on a screen instead of in a driver's hand.

It is late, the cab is dark, the meter says 87,000 and you hand over what you think is a 500,000 note. The driver holds up a 20,000, shakes his head and says you are short. You are now arguing about a note you can no longer see.

This is one of the oldest money tricks in Vietnam, and it still works because two of the notes really do look alike. Our [Vietnam money scams guide](https://blog.fizen.io/money-scams-vietnam-avoid-2026/) covers the wider picture. This post is about this one trap, and how to make it impossible.

## Why do the 500,000 and 20,000 dong notes look alike?

Both are blue plastic notes with Ho Chi Minh on the front. In low light, or with a fan of notes in your hand, the colour difference disappears. The differences that survive the dark are size and the picture on the back.

| | 20,000 dong | 500,000 dong |
| ---------------- | ------------------------------- | ---------------------------------- |
| Colour | Medium blue | Lighter cyan-blue |
| Size | 136 x 65 mm | 152 x 65 mm |
| Back of the note | Japanese Covered Bridge, Hoi An | Kim Lien, Ho Chi Minh's birthplace |
| Zeros | Four | Five |

The 500,000 is 16 mm longer. Laid flat on your palm it usually reaches past your fingers; the 20,000 does not. Raised printing is also stronger on the 500,000, so you can feel for it.

## How does the taxi note-switch work?

You hand over a large note. The driver drops it below the seat line, brings up a 20,000 and says that is what you gave him. Or the large note vanishes during a 'toll' or 'change' moment and he asks you to pay again. A June 2024 investigation by Phap Luat TP.HCM described drivers of unlicensed taxis, including private cars with white plates working as cabs, swapping 500,000 notes for 20,000 notes and then demanding more, with many foreign tourists among the targets.

It is rarely the only trick in play. At the Ho Chi Minh City airport taxi stand, a traveller reported in a TripAdvisor thread that the driver claimed the meter was on, then typed 500,000 dong into his phone as the fare. Once the traveller had data, Grab quoted about a quarter of that for the 15 to 20 minute ride to District 1\. Taxi fares must be posted on the vehicle, a Ho Chi Minh City lawyer told the same newspaper, so a phone screen is not a meter.

## What do people who have done it say?

- **Break it before the ride.** Long-time visitors say any Circle K or 7-Eleven will break a 500,000; buy a bottle of water, and never show a 500,000 to a taxi driver.
- **Light the money.** Turn on the cab's light or use your phone screen before you hand over a note.
- **Hold on until you see the change.** If a driver has to break a big note, keep it in your hand until the change is counted out.
- **Go to the company rep at the airport.** Regulars in the Ho Chi Minh City forum say scam taxis also work the official stand; walk to the Vinasun or Mai Linh marshal and take only their car.
- **Carry a stack of small notes.** Visitors recommend lots of 20,000, 10,000 and 50,000 notes, and using the biggest note at restaurants, where staff will break it honestly.

## How do you pay a taxi without handing over notes?

The cleanest fix is to take the notes out of the transaction. Booking through a ride-hailing app such as Grab fixes the fare before you get in, and you can pay in the app. In shops, cafes and with some drivers, a VietQR code on the dashboard or counter does the same job: the amount is typed and shown on your screen, in dong, before you confirm.

Visitors and foreigners in Vietnam (not Vietnamese residents) can pay those codes with Fizen QR Pay. Create or import your Fizen wallet, which is non-custodial, get USDT on Solana or BNB Chain into it, deposit from the wallet into QR Pay (KYC per wallet and per device), then scan and pay. It pays VietQR, VNPay, MoMo and ZaloPay codes of Vietnamese account holders. Depositing on BNB Chain needs no gas; on Solana you need a little SOL. Steps are in the [getting started guide](https://docs.fizen.io/help-center/fizen-qr-pay/getting-started?ref=blog.fizen.io), and our guide to [checking the name on a VietQR code](https://blog.fizen.io/read-vietqr-code-check-name-vietnam-2026/) shows what to look at before you confirm.

The limits: QR Pay is funded only with USDT on Solana or BNB Chain, with no bank link or card; USDT on another network, or another token, cannot be deposited. Payments are up to US$800 each and US$1,000 per week. Be realistic too: many metered taxis and street vendors still want cash, so keep small notes for them. The Fizen wallet is self-custody; USDT you move into QR Pay is governed by the QR Pay Terms, so only move in what you plan to spend.

## Frequently asked questions

#### How do I tell a 500,000 dong note from a 20,000?

Check the length and the zeros. The 500,000 is 152 mm long with five zeros and Kim Lien on the back; the 20,000 is 136 mm with four zeros and Hoi An's Japanese Covered Bridge.

#### What is the taxi note-switch scam in Vietnam?

A driver takes your 500,000 dong note, shows you a 20,000 instead and claims you underpaid. A 2024 Ho Chi Minh City press investigation linked it to unlicensed taxis targeting tourists.

#### Where can I break a 500,000 dong note?

Convenience stores such as Circle K and 7-Eleven, restaurants, banks and hotels. Buy something small and keep the change in small notes.

#### Which taxis are safest from Ho Chi Minh City airport?

Forum regulars recommend going to the Vinasun or Mai Linh representative at the stand, or booking through a ride-hailing app so the fare is fixed in advance.

#### Can I pay a Vietnamese taxi by QR as a tourist?

Where the driver shows a VietQR, MoMo or ZaloPay code, visitors can pay it with Fizen QR Pay, funded with USDT on Solana or BNB Chain. Many drivers still prefer cash.

#### Are Vietnam's 500,000 dong notes real plastic?

Yes, the 500,000 and 20,000 notes are both polymer, which is one reason they feel similar.

#### Pay the amount on the screen

Fizen is building the stablecoin neobank for people on the move: a wallet you own, local QR payments, investing and travel data in one app. Visitors in Vietnam can pay local QR codes with QR Pay and see the amount in dong before they confirm.
