# Can You Tap a Foreign Credit Card on the Taipei MRT in 2026? Yes, Since July, but EasyCard Still Wins Sometimes

- Description: For years the answer was no. Since 1 July 2026 you can tap a foreign Visa or Mastercard, or your phone, at every Taipei MRT gate. Here is what that gets you, and when an EasyCard is still the better buy.

**Quick answer:** Yes. Since 1 July 2026 every Taipei MRT station accepts contactless Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Discover and Diners Club International cards, including cards issued abroad, plus Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay. Tap in and out with the same card or phone. Card taps do not get the frequent-rider discount, the bus transfer discount or TPASS, so an EasyCard still pays off if you ride a lot or mix the MRT with buses.

**Key takeaways**

- **Live since 1 July 2026.** Taipei Metro opened all stations to domestic and foreign contactless cards and phone wallets, after a six-month trial that logged over a million rides.
- **Same card in, same card out.** Entry and exit must use the same card or device.
- **iPhone is easiest.** With Express Mode on, Apple Pay works without unlocking, even briefly after the battery dies; Google Pay and Samsung Pay need the phone unlocked.
- **What you give up:** frequent-rider discounts, the MRT and bus transfer discount and TPASS stay with EasyCard, iPASS and icash 2.0.
- **Kaohsiung and the Taoyuan Airport MRT also take bank cards,** at the published single fare.

In 2023 a newcomer on a Taiwan expat forum asked why he could tap his Visa in London and Singapore but not on the Taipei MRT. The answer then was a flat no: EasyCard or iPass, full stop. In 2026 that changed. If you land at Taoyuan this year with a contactless card or a phone wallet, you can walk straight through a Taipei MRT gate without buying anything first. The question now is whether you should.

## What changed on the Taipei MRT in 2026?

Taipei Metro spent two years replacing about 1,400 gates across 117 stations, a project of about 450 million New Taiwan dollars, TVBS reported in January 2026\. QR-code entry through local payment apps such as Easy Wallet, iPASS MONEY, icash Pay and JKO Pay started on 3 January 2026, together with a credit card trial limited to one bank's cards.

On 1 July 2026 the full rollout went live. Taiwan News and the Taipei Times reported that riders can enter every station with Taiwan-issued or foreign contactless credit cards on Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Discover Network and Diners Club International, or with Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay. The point, the operator and its bank partner said, is that visitors no longer need a separate transit card or a single-journey token queue. Some local guides also list UnionPay; look for the contactless symbol on your card either way.

## How do I tap through with a phone or card?

1. **Check your card is contactless** and enabled for overseas use in your banking app.
2. **On iPhone, turn on Express Mode** for the card in Wallet (Card Details, then Express Transit). You can then tap without unlocking, and it keeps working for a short time after the battery runs out.
3. **On Android, unlock first.** Google Pay and Samsung Pay need the phone unlocked at the reader.
4. **Tap out with the same card or phone you tapped in with.** The card in your phone wallet counts as a different card from the plastic one.

Every tap is a small foreign card transaction, so check whether your bank adds a foreign transaction fee; a no-FX-fee card makes this painless.

## Card tap or EasyCard: which should a visitor use?

| | Contactless card or phone | EasyCard / iPASS |
| ----------------------------- | ------------------------- | -------------------------------------- |
| Buy anything first | No | Yes, at a station or convenience store |
| Frequent-rider discount | No | Yes |
| MRT and bus transfer discount | No | Yes |
| TPASS monthly pass | No | Yes |
| Works beyond the MRT | Check each operator | Buses, many shops, other cities |

The fare rules come from local guides published in July and September 2026: because the gates cannot store card numbers, the operator cannot count your rides, so card taps miss the loyalty and transfer discounts. For a long weekend of a few rides a day, the card is simpler. For a week with buses, day trips and convenience-store snacks, an EasyCard earns its keep.

## What about Kaohsiung and the airport line?

Kaohsiung was ahead of Taipei: a 2023 forum poster already reported its gates taking credit cards, Apple Pay and Samsung Pay, at a higher fare than EasyCard. A September 2026 Taiwanese guide lists Visa, Mastercard, JCB, UnionPay and American Express there, charged at the published single fare. The Taoyuan Airport MRT takes Visa, Mastercard, JCB and UnionPay and phone wallets, also at the single fare.

## What people who have done it say

- **Ask for EasyCard by name.** MRT staff, 7-Eleven and the airport all know the English name; in 2023 a basic card cost about 100 Taiwan dollars with no registration.
- **Watch-wearers: check your brand.** In 2023, Fitbit users could add EasyCard wherever the watch was bought, while Garmin and Samsung watches were region-locked for it.
- **Your bank may charge per tap.** Locals pointed out that bank fees on many tiny transit payments add up, which is why the system long stuck with stored-value cards.
- **Short stay, many sights? Consider a pass.** Regulars point visitors to the Taipei Pass for unlimited travel over one to five days.

## Does Fizen help on the Taipei MRT?

Not at the gate. Fizen does not pay MRT fares, and Fizen QR Pay works only in Vietnam and the Philippines, not in Taiwan. Where Fizen fits is the phone in your hand: route planning, the bus arrival app and the restaurant you are hunting for after you exit all need data.

In the Fizen catalogue on 26 October 2026, Taiwan country plans ran on Taiwan Mobile (4G and 5G); that is one option, so check the eSIM tab in the app for current plans. Install it at home and it connects at Taoyuan. It is data only, so keep your home SIM on for bank codes.
