- Description: Friday night in Sapa, the second ATM says no, and the homestay in Ta Van wants cash in the morning. Here is how to plan cash, data and payments for a Sapa trek in 2026.

**Quick answer:** For a 2 to 3 day Sapa trek, bring about 3 to 5 million dong per person from Hanoi, because Sapa's ATMs often run dry at weekends and homestays and trekking guides are usually cash only. For data, a Viettel-based eSIM installed before you leave Hanoi covers Sapa town and the valley villages, and as of 26 October 2026 one Fizen option for Vietnam runs on Viettel 4G.

**Key takeaways**

- **Withdraw in Hanoi.** A September 2026 Sapa money guide says cash is trucked up from Lao Cai with no same-day restocking, and machines empty from Friday to Sunday and on holidays.
- **Village stays are cash.** Homestays, trekking operators, markets and village entry fees usually want dong; cards with a 2 to 3% surcharge are for mid-range hotels.
- **Data follows people.** Viettel reports 4G for 99.7% of Vietnam's population; plan to be offline on the high trails.
- **Go early for views.** Fansipan is clearest around 8:00 to 9:30 in the morning, and September to November is the best window.

It is Friday night on Cau May street. The first ATM gives you 2 million dong and then nothing, the second says out of service, and the homestay in Ta Van told you cash in the morning. Sapa is beautiful, small and far from the bank's cash truck, and that combination catches people every weekend.

## Why do Sapa ATMs run dry, and how much cash do you need?

A Sapa money guide updated on 19 September 2026 explains it: cash comes up from Lao Cai on a schedule, so weekend and holiday demand can empty machines, withdrawals are often capped at 2 to 3 million dong, and smaller machines sometimes decline foreign cards. It suggests 3 to 5 million dong per person for 2 to 3 days, plus a 1 to 2 million reserve, with 500,000 notes broken before you arrive.

| What you pay | Usually |
| ------------------------------------- | ------------------------- |
| Village homestay, trekking guide | Cash |
| Market, village entry, motorbike taxi | Cash |
| Mid-range hotel, tourist restaurant | Card, often 2 to 3% extra |
| Fansipan cable car | Online or at the counter |

## Where will your phone work on a Sapa trek?

Coverage follows people. Viettel says its 4G reaches 99.7% of Vietnam's population, reported when it switched off 2G in September 2026, so Sapa town and the valley villages are where your bars live. On the high routes, such as the Tram Ton trail up Fansipan, plan to be offline; Jungle Boss notes a licensed local guide is mandatory there under Hoang Lien National Park rules. Download offline maps, save your homestay's pin and phone number, and carry a power bank. The cable car costs 850,000 dong round trip for adults as of early 2026, and the summit is clearest from 8:00 to 9:30.

## What do people who have trekked Sapa say?

- **Take the night train.** Riders of the sleeper bus say it can drop you in Sapa at 4 or 5am with nothing open; the train to Lao Cai is smoother, then about an hour up.
- **Skip Cat Cat, sleep in the valley.** Travellers call Cat Cat a spruced-up show village and point to Ta Van or Lao Chai homestays instead.
- **November is bare and misty.** After the harvest the terraces turn brown; two or three days is plenty then.
- **Leave Sapa by late afternoon.** Local buses to Lao Cai run every 30 to 60 minutes until about 6pm, after that it is a taxi.

## Which eSIM works in Sapa, and how much data?

As of 26 October 2026, one option in the Fizen catalog is the Asia regional plan (18 countries), which uses Viettel Mobile 4G in Vietnam and slows to 128 kbps after the high-speed data. Sizes run from 1 to 50 GB, 3 to 30 days; check the eSIM tab in the app or fizen.io/esim for current Vietnam plans.

| Trip | Data | Plan that survives |
| ---------------------------------- | ----------- | ------------------ |
| Hanoi plus 2-day Sapa trek, 5 days | 5 to 6 GB | 10 GB, 7 days |
| Two weeks north, Sapa and Ha Giang | 14 to 18 GB | 20 GB, 15 days |

Install at home on Wi-Fi and keep your home SIM for bank SMS. Plans cannot be topped up, so size for the trip.

## Can visitors pay by QR in Sapa, or is a local SIM better?

Town cafes often show a VietQR code. Foreign visitors (not Vietnamese residents) can pay those with Fizen QR Pay: create or import your Fizen wallet (non-custodial), add USDT on Solana or BNB Chain, deposit from the wallet into QR Pay (KYC per wallet and per device), then scan. It pays Vietnamese account holders' VietQR, VNPay, MoMo and ZaloPay codes; funding is USDT on Solana or BNB Chain only, and USDT on another network, or another token, cannot be deposited. Limits: US$800 per payment, US$1,000 per week. [Getting started](https://docs.fizen.io/help-center/fizen-qr-pay/getting-started?ref=blog.fizen.io). In the villages, cash still wins.

A Viettel SIM bought in Hanoi works on the same towers if you can visit a store. A verified Fizen-side eSIM fault gets a free 1-for-1 replacement for the trip.

## Frequently asked questions

#### Do Sapa homestays take cards?

Most village homestays in Ta Van and Lao Chai want cash. Some larger lodges take cards, often with a 2 to 3% surcharge, so ask before you arrive.

#### Are there ATMs in Sapa?

Yes, in Sapa town, but they can run dry from Friday to Sunday and on holidays, and withdrawals are often capped at 2 to 3 million dong. Withdraw in Hanoi first.

#### Is there phone signal in the Sapa valley?

In Sapa town and the valley villages, generally yes. On high trails such as the routes up Fansipan, plan to be offline and download maps.

#### How much data do I need for Sapa?

About 1 GB a day for maps, messages and photos. A 10 GB, 7-day plan covers Hanoi plus a 2-day trek.

#### Can I use QR Pay in Sapa?

Yes, as a foreign visitor, at shops and cafes showing a Vietnamese account holder's code. QR Pay is funded only with USDT on Solana or BNB Chain.

#### Set up your Vietnam line before the night train

Choose the Vietnam plan by data size and days and install it on home Wi-Fi. Pay by card via Stripe (international Visa or Mastercard, Apple Pay or Google Pay), or with USDT on Solana or BNB Chain in the Fizen app, where new users get US$10 of eSIM credit in the Fizen app's eSIM tab, no code needed. The same app runs QR Pay for visitors in Vietnam.
