- Description: Vietnam's QR economy was built for locals. A US traveller can still scan and pay from a USDT balance, with the amount shown in dong before confirming.

**Quick answer:** If you are a US traveller in Vietnam for one to two weeks, the QR codes on every counter are reachable without a Vietnamese bank account: QR Pay in the Fizen app lets you scan a supported local QR and pay from a USDT balance you already hold, with the amount shown in dong before you confirm. MoMo, ZaloPay and VNPay-QR, the wallets locals use, generally expect a Vietnamese SIM and a Vietnamese bank account, per Vietnam Knowledge's 30 June 2026 comparison.

**Key takeaways**

- **Vietnam's QR rail is VietQR**, the national standard operated by NAPAS, accepted by over 2 million merchants across 55 banks and payment institutions, per NUS March Grad Show's 9 July 2026 review.
- **The local wallets are not built for you.** MoMo and ZaloPay were designed around a Vietnamese national ID and a Vietnamese phone number, and formal KYC generally expects that ID, per Vietnam Knowledge, 30 June 2026.
- **QR Pay is for travellers and foreigners only**, works from USDT on Solana and BNB, applies KYC, and is available where you are travelling, not where you live.
- **You keep your keys.** The balance is yours, and the amount in local currency is shown before you confirm.

I typed "payment app vietnam" on the plane because I had read that Vietnam runs on QR codes and I did not want to spend two weeks hunting ATMs. Then I landed and found out the hard way: MoMo, ZaloPay and VNPay were all built around a Vietnamese national ID and a Vietnamese phone number, so the QR sticker on the counter was visible but not reachable from my phone.

This is what actually works for a foreigner paying in Vietnam in 2026, what each route costs, and where the local wallets still beat everything else.

## Can a foreigner actually sign up for MoMo, ZaloPay or VNPay?

MoMo, ZaloPay and VNPay were all built around a Vietnamese national ID (CCCD) and a Vietnamese phone number, according to a Vietnam Knowledge comparison last reviewed on 30 June 2026\. That is the first wall a visitor hits. A Vietnamese SIM in your own name is close to a hard requirement for MoMo and ZaloPay registration, and both also expect a VND bank account before the wallet is fully usable.

ZaloPay is the softer of the two. Its official sign-up page offers a separate passport option, and VietinKo reported on 5 May 2026 that passport mapping to the CCCD pattern can still take one or two resubmissions. MoMo is stricter: VietinKo puts foreigner KYC at one to three business days after a passport photo and facial verification, and Korean cards cannot be linked to either wallet under State Bank of Vietnam foreign exchange rules.

| App | Vietnamese SIM | Vietnamese bank account | Passport KYC | Foreigner difficulty |
| -------- | -------------- | ----------------------- | ----------------------- | -------------------- |
| MoMo | Required | Required | Lv2 recommended | Medium |
| ZaloPay | Required | Required | Passport option offered | Medium |
| VNPay-QR | Not required | Required (bank app) | Covered by bank KYC | Low |

## What is VietQR and why can't my home bank app scan it?

VietQR is Vietnam's national QR payment standard, operated by the National Payment Corporation of Vietnam (NAPAS). It is accepted by over 2 million merchants across 55 banks and payment institutions, from supermarkets and hotels to street food carts, according to a 9 July 2026 review by the NUS March Grad Show editorial team.

The sticker is visible to everyone. The rail behind it is not. VietQR settles to a Vietnamese bank account, so a foreign bank app can see the code but cannot reach the local rail. ADAPAY's 2026 guide puts it plainly: the missing piece is not the QR sticker, it is access to the local rail behind the sticker.

That is why visitors end up paying cash at a merchant who is clearly cashless-ready. The merchant did their part. The foreigner's bank app has no route into NAPAS, and no amount of scanning changes that.

## Which payment app in Vietnam works without a local bank account?

For a short trip, the honest answer is that the local wallets do not. Vietnam Knowledge's 30 June 2026 comparison says short-term travelers without a residence card may find it simpler to rely on their home bank's own VNPay-QR support, or to route ride and food payments through Grab's Moca wallet, which is built into the Grab app. Cash and card remain the fallback.

Crypto-funded routes exist and are aimed at exactly this gap. Bybit Pay launched in Vietnam in June 2025 with AEON and lets Bybit account holders scan VietQR codes from 16 cryptocurrencies, but Bybit's own launch announcement scoped it to over 90% of local merchants in urban areas, so street vendors and markets are largely out. Binance Pay added Vietnam tourist QR payments in early 2026, limited to tourist-heavy areas.

- No local bank account: Moreta Pay, Bybit Pay, Binance Pay, Fizen QR Pay.
- Urban or tourist zones only: Bybit Pay, Binance Pay.
- Full VietQR coverage: Moreta Pay, Fizen QR Pay.
- Residents only in practice: MoMo, ZaloPay, VNPay-QR.

## What does each Vietnam payment route cost per transaction?

Costs are where the routes separate. Moreta Pay charges 1.5% on every payment in Vietnam plus a 0.6% FX conversion spread, according to the 9 July 2026 review. Bybit Pay and Binance Pay both state zero fees on the QR payment itself, but both are exchange features limited to urban or tourist areas, so the saving only applies where they are accepted.

| Route | Transaction fee | FX spread | Coverage | Who can use it |
| -------------- | --------------------- | -------------- | ---------------------------------- | ------------------------------- |
| Moreta Pay | 1.5% | 0.6% | Full VietQR | Foreigners, card or bank funded |
| Bybit Pay | Zero fees stated | Not stated | Urban areas, 90%+ of merchants | Existing Bybit users |
| Binance Pay | Zero fees stated | Not stated | Tourist areas | Existing Binance users |
| MoMo / ZaloPay | Free between users | Not applicable | Widest merchant network | Vietnamese SIM and bank account |
| Fizen QR Pay | Not stated in dossier | Not stated | Vietnam, travellers and foreigners | USDT on Solana or BNB, KYC |

## How do I fund a QR payment balance in Vietnam as a visitor?

You fund it from USDT you already hold, not from a Vietnamese bank account. QR Pay is non-custodial: it works from a USDT balance on Solana and BNB, KYC applies, and the amount is shown in Vietnamese dong before you confirm. You keep your keys, so the balance stays yours.

So the practical funding route for a two-week visitor is stablecoin in, dong out at the counter. Fund the balance before you fly, because topping up on hotel Wi-Fi the night before a market day is the failure mode. The same balance also buys the travel eSIM, which is the data line QR Pay needs to work.

| Route | What it needs from you | Works for a short-stay visitor? |
| -------- | ---------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------- |
| QR Pay | USDT on Solana or BNB, KYC, app | Yes, no Vietnamese bank account |
| MoMo | Vietnamese SIM, VND bank account, KYC | Not in practice |
| ZaloPay | Zalo account, Vietnamese SIM, VND bank account | Not in practice |
| VNPay-QR | A Vietnamese bank app | Only if you already bank locally |

## Is a Vietnamese tourist SIM or eSIM the better base for QR payments?

For a trip under a month, eSIM. The reason is not price, it is that a Vietnamese SIM is the first of the three registration barriers, and buying one does not unlock the wallets anyway. You still need a VND bank account and KYC after that, which VietinKo's 5 May 2026 guide puts at 1 to 3 business days for passport plus facial verification, and which ZaloPay users may have to resubmit one or two times.

A tourist SIM does beat eSIM in one case: a long stay where you intend to open a local bank account and use MoMo or ZaloPay as a resident. Then the SIM is not a connectivity purchase, it is the first step of a local setup, and it is worth the counter queue.

For everyone else, an eSIM installed before you fly gives you the data line QR Pay runs on, keeps your home number live for bank SMS, and skips the airport SIM desk. Buy and install before departure, then turn on data roaming for the travel line when you land.

## Frequently asked questions

#### Can I use MoMo in Vietnam as an American tourist?

Usually not. Vietnam Knowledge's 30 June 2026 comparison found MoMo and ZaloPay were designed around a Vietnamese national ID and phone number, and formal KYC generally expects that ID. Passport verification is sometimes accepted, particularly on ZaloPay, but it varies.

#### What is VietQR and does it work with a foreign app?

VietQR is Vietnam's national QR payment standard, operated by NAPAS and accepted by over 2 million merchants across 55 banks and payment institutions, per NUS March Grad Show, 9 July 2026\. A foreign bank app usually cannot reach it directly.

#### Do I need a Vietnamese bank account to pay by QR in Vietnam?

For the local wallets, yes. Vietnam Knowledge's 30 June 2026 guide says many long-stay foreigners link a wallet to a Vietnamese bank account, which usually requires a temporary residence card or a longer-stay visa. Short-term travellers generally cannot.

#### How do I fund QR Pay in Vietnam?

From a USDT balance you already hold, on Solana or BNB. KYC applies. The amount in local currency is shown before you confirm, and you keep your keys throughout.

#### Can a Vietnamese resident use QR Pay?

No. QR Pay is for travellers and foreigners in Vietnam and the Philippines. A Vietnamese person in Vietnam cannot use it, and it is not a way to send money to family.
