**Quick answer:** Yes, with one big exception. Buying, selling and holding crypto in Indonesia is legal when you trade through platforms licensed by the Financial Services Authority (OJK), which took over supervision from the commodities regulator Bappebti on 10 January 2025\. Paying for goods and services with crypto is not allowed: the rupiah is the only legal tender, and Bali's authorities have warned tourists and businesses against crypto payments.

**Key takeaways**

- **The OJK has supervised crypto since 10 January 2025.** Government Regulation 49/2024 moved it from Bappebti, and OJK Regulation 27/2024 now governs trading, treating crypto as a digital financial asset rather than a commodity.
- **Trade through licensed platforms.** OJK reported 27 licensed digital financial asset traders, two exchanges, two clearing houses and two custodians as of July 2026, with 22.93 million trading accounts.
- **Tax is collected at the trade.** Since 1 August 2025, sellers pay a 0.21% final income tax through domestic platforms and 1% through foreign ones; crypto transfers are exempt from VAT.
- **Paying in crypto is still banned.** Holding is legal; settling a hotel bill or a surf lesson in crypto is not.

The question usually comes up in a Canggu cafe with a sign that says it takes crypto. Is that legal? Is holding USDT legal? Will anyone care if you pay your villa in USDT?

Indonesia has given clearer answers since 2025 than most of the region, and they split neatly in two: owning and trading crypto is a regulated financial activity, paying with it is not. Here is what the rules say, with the official dates.

## Who regulates crypto in Indonesia now?

The Financial Services Authority, the OJK. Law 4/2023, the financial sector omnibus law, ordered the handover, and Government Regulation 49/2024 carried it out: on 10 January 2025, supervision of digital financial assets, including crypto assets, moved from Bappebti to the OJK, while Bank Indonesia took the money market and foreign exchange derivatives. OJK Regulation 27/2024, effective the same day, replaced Bappebti's rulebook.

The change is more than a new logo on the letterhead. Crypto is now classed as a digital financial asset, platforms answer to the same regulator as banks and insurers, and licensed firms had to meet tougher governance, consumer protection and data protection standards within months of the handover.

## Is it legal to buy and hold crypto in Indonesia?

Yes, through licensed platforms. As of July 2026 the OJK counted 2 digital financial asset exchanges, 2 clearing houses, 2 custodians and 27 licensed digital financial asset traders, and 22.93 million trading accounts, according to state broadcaster RRI. The regulator's own figure is accounts, not unique people.

Holding coins in your own wallet is not the problem area; the rules target where you trade. Before you sign up anywhere, check that the platform is on the OJK's list of licensed traders.

## How is crypto taxed in Indonesia?

| What | Rule since 1 August 2025 (PMK 50/2025) |
| ------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------- |
| Selling through a domestic licensed platform | 0.21% final income tax, collected by the platform |
| Selling through a foreign platform or on your own | 1% final income tax |
| Buying or transferring crypto | Exempt from VAT |
| Platform fees and mining services | Subject to VAT |

The higher rate for foreign platforms is deliberate: it nudges Indonesian traders toward local, licensed venues. This is a summary of KPMG's note on the regulation, not tax advice.

## Can you pay with crypto in Indonesia?

No. The rupiah is the only legal tender, and Bank Indonesia does not allow crypto as a means of payment. Bali is where this gets tested, because that is where the cafes and villas that advertise crypto are. In May 2023 the Governor of Bali said tourists using crypto to pay would be dealt with firmly, with deportation and business closures among the options, and Bank Indonesia's Bali office repeated that trading is allowed but paying is not.

For a visitor the safe version is simple: hold whatever you like, pay in rupiah. In practice that means cash, a card where it is taken, or the QRIS codes on almost every counter if your home banking app is linked to QRIS.

## What does this mean if you hold USDT?

- **Buying and selling:** use an OJK-licensed platform if you are in Indonesia, and keep the records the 0.21% tax creates.
- **Holding:** a self-custody wallet, such as the Fizen wallet, means you hold the keys, so no platform's status change can lock you out of your own balance.
- **Spending:** convert to rupiah first. Crypto at the till is the part the law does not allow.
- **Moving between countries:** check the rules where you land, because Indonesia's answer is not Vietnam's or the Philippines'.
