# Grab Won't Take Your Foreign Card in Vietnam? Location Lock, 3D Secure and the Fixes (2026)

- Description: The card works at home, works on Booking, and Grab still says 'unsuccessful'. Here is what travellers found actually causes it in Vietnam, and the order to fix it in, standing at the airport kerb.

**Quick answer:** When Grab in Vietnam refuses a foreign card, it is usually one of three things: you tried to add the card before you were in a Grab country, your bank's 3D Secure code went to a phone line that was switched off, or GrabPay by Moca, which needs a Vietnamese bank card, was set as the default. Add or re-add the card after you land, keep your home SIM on for the bank's SMS code, pick the card (not Moca) before you book, and keep Cash as the fallback.

**Key takeaways**

- **Try at home, finish on arrival.** Travellers have reported since 2019 that a foreign card would only add once they were physically in a Grab country. If it errors at home, stop retrying and add it after landing.
- **The 3D Secure code goes to your home number.** Keep the home SIM switched on with data roaming off, and use a travel eSIM for data, so the code and the map both work.
- **Moca is not for visitors.** The GrabPay by Moca wallet needs a Vietnamese bank card. Your foreign card can still pay rides directly; select it before you confirm.
- **Short rides are often cash anyway.** Posters paying 18,000 to 40,000 dong a ride said card fees were not worth it. Keep small notes.

You land at Noi Bai or Tan Son Nhat, open Grab, and the card that worked on every booking for this trip comes back with 'Unsuccessful. Please check your card details and try again.' The driver is three minutes away and you have a 500,000 dong note.

This is the narrow fix-it version. For what Grab Vietnam accepts and what rides cost, see our [Grab payment methods guide](https://blog.fizen.io/grab-payment-methods-vietnam-2026/).

## Why does Grab reject a card that works everywhere else?

Your card is rarely the problem. It is how and where you added it. These are the causes travellers keep running into, matched to the fix.

| Error when adding the card at home | Card added outside a Grab country | Add it again after you land, on airport Wi-Fi or travel data |
| Stuck on the bank verification screen | 3D Secure code sent to a home number that is off or not receiving SMS | Turn the home SIM on, or approve in your bank app |
| Card saved but rides fail | GrabPay by Moca set as default | Switch payment to the card or Cash before you book |
| Card refused, other cards fine | Issuer blocking an unfamiliar foreign merchant | Enable overseas and online use in the bank app, or call the issuer |

## Should you add the card before you fly or after you land?

Try before, finish after. A Vietnam travel guide updated on 21 October 2026 tells visitors to set up payment before arriving because card verification can fail. Traveller reports point the other way for the card itself: in a long-running Grab thread, a poster who kept getting errors at home said the card only added once they were physically in a country where Grab runs, and they had done exactly that in the Philippines and Singapore.

So install Grab and register your account at home, where the sign-up code reaches your normal number. Try adding the card. If it errors, leave it and add it in Vietnam, where you will need working data at the kerb anyway.

One more trap: do not log out of Grab while abroad. Logging back in sends a code to the number on the account, and an old Vietnamese tourist SIM may have expired. One poster kept the same account for years across Thailand, Malaysia and Bali by never logging out.

## Why does the 3D Secure code never arrive?

Because it goes to your home phone number, and many travellers switch that line off or swap the SIM out on landing. Your bank, not Grab, sends that one-time code, so a Vietnamese SIM in the phone cannot receive it.

1. **Keep the home SIM in and switched on,** with data roaming off so you are not billed for data. Whether receiving SMS abroad costs anything depends on your carrier.
2. **Put your data on a second line,** a travel eSIM or a local SIM, and set it as the data line.
3. **Check whether your bank can approve in its app** instead of by SMS. Turn that on before you fly.
4. **Still nothing?** Call the issuer and ask them to allow the Grab charge, then try again.

The same set-up keeps WhatsApp, Grab and your bank codes working together. Our guide to [keeping WhatsApp and bank OTP with a travel eSIM](https://blog.fizen.io/keep-whatsapp-and-bank-otp-with-travel-esim-2026/) walks through the phone settings.

## What do people who have done it say?

- **You do not need a Vietnamese number or card.** Several posters linked overseas cards and were billed with no problems; one rode on a data-only Viettel SIM with no Vietnamese number at all.
- **The card still works when the wallet will not.** Since Grab Vietnam moved its wallet to Moca, travellers could not top it up with a foreign card, but the same card paid rides once selected before booking.
- **Some card forms simply will not take you.** A UK traveller could not get past the card form's numeric postcode field in 2020 and fell back on cash; if one card fails at the form, try a different card rather than retyping.
- **Use a spare digital card for apps.** One Australian traveller kept a separate digital debit card just for Grab and transport apps during the trip.
- **For short hops, cash wins.** A long-stay poster said rides of about 18,000 to 40,000 dong were not worth a card fee.

## What if nothing works and the driver is outside?

Switch the payment to Cash before you confirm the booking, pay the fare shown in dong, and carry small notes: drivers often cannot break a 500,000\. See [the 500,000 versus 20,000 dong mix-up](https://blog.fizen.io/vietnam-500000-vs-20000-dong-note-taxi-swap-2026/). Fix the card that evening on hotel Wi-Fi, with the home SIM on.

## Where does Fizen help, and where does it not?

Be clear: Fizen is not a Grab payment method, and nothing here makes Grab accept a card it refuses. What Fizen fixes is the data half of the problem, the reason most of these fixes stall at the airport.

A Fizen travel eSIM sits next to your home SIM. Install it at home on Wi-Fi, switch it on when you land, and you have data for Grab and the card set-up while the home line stays on for your bank's 3D Secure code. In the Fizen catalogue on 2 November 2026, Vietnam plans run on Viettel Mobile 4G as part of a regional Asia plan, slowing to 128 kbps once the data is used; check Package details. Plans are data-only, and your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked.

If the eSIM fails on Fizen's side, a real person in in-app chat arranges a 1:1 replacement or refund for the length of the trip. Changed plans? An unused, not-yet-installed eSIM can usually be taken back; eligibility depends on the plan, check Package details or ask chat. Most plans cannot be topped up, so more data means a new eSIM.

A small welcome too: as part of a new Fizen programme, a US$10 eSIM credit is waiting in the eSIM tab of the Fizen app, taken off the bill automatically at checkout (up to 30% of each plan), no code needed. Pay with USDT on Solana or BNB Chain in the app, or by card via Stripe. For the banh mi stall the ride drops you at, visitors can pay the shop's VietQR code from USDT with Fizen QR Pay in the same app.

The picture afterwards: the driver finds you at the pickup point, the ride bills to your card, and the bank code lands on the phone in your hand.

## Frequently asked questions

#### Why can't I add my foreign card to Grab before going to Vietnam?

Travellers have reported since 2019 that Grab only accepted their foreign card once they were physically in a country where Grab operates. Register the account at home, and if the card errors, add it after you land.

#### Do I need a Vietnamese phone number to pay Grab by card?

No. Posters used overseas numbers and data-only Vietnamese SIMs. You do need a number that can receive the Grab sign-in code, and your bank's 3D Secure code goes to your home number.

#### Can I top up GrabPay by Moca with a foreign card?

No. Moca needs a Vietnamese bank card. Your foreign card can still pay rides directly if you select it as the payment method before booking.

#### My bank's verification code never arrives in Vietnam. What do I do?

Keep your home SIM switched on with data roaming off, use a travel eSIM or local SIM for data, and turn on in-app approval with your bank if it offers it. If the code still fails, call the issuer.

#### Can I pay Grab with USDT or Fizen?

No. Fizen is not a Grab payment method. Fizen gives you travel data to run Grab, and visitors can use Fizen QR Pay for shop and cafe QR codes.

#### Land with data, keep your bank codes

Install a Vietnam eSIM at home, switch it on at the kerb, and keep your home SIM on for 3D Secure codes. Pay by card via Stripe (international Visa or Mastercard, Apple Pay, Google Pay), or with USDT on Solana or BNB Chain in the Fizen app, where a US$10 eSIM credit is waiting in the eSIM tab for new users.
