- Description: You gave up the flat, then the bank asked for a utility bill. Why money apps care where you live, what you can honestly use as an address, and a setup that keeps working.

**Quick answer:** You cannot honestly run a bank account with no address at all: banks and money apps must know where you live, and most tie the account to that country. What works for full-time nomads is one genuine home base (the country and address you really return to and are tax resident in), accounts opened from that base, a local account where you hold a residence visa, and a self-custody wallet that is not tied to any branch or billing address.

**Key takeaways**

- **The address is not a formality.** Revolut says you cannot keep your main account once you are no longer resident in the country it was opened in. Wise needs a physical address and does not accept PO boxes.
- **Pick one real home base.** The place you actually return to and are tax resident in is the address that keeps accounts open. A mail drop is not a residence.
- **Local accounts follow your visa.** In Vietnam a foreigner living there opens a payment account with a passport plus a visa or equivalent document.
- **A wallet you hold has no branch.** A self-custody wallet such as Fizen keeps working if a bank closes an account, though services like QR Pay still need KYC.

You handed back the keys to the flat in March. By October you are in Chiang Mai, and your bank's app asks you to confirm your address with a utility bill from the last three months. There is no bill, because there is no flat. This is the moment most nomads discover that a bank account is not just an app: it is a promise that you live somewhere.

## Why do banks and money apps care where you live?

Every regulated money business has to know its customer, and part of knowing you is knowing your country of residence. It decides which licence covers your account, which tax reporting applies and which products you may hold. When that country changes, the account often has to change too.

The rules are written down. Revolut's help centre says that if you move to a different country you need to close your account to open one in another supported country, and that you cannot keep your main account if you are no longer resident where it was opened. A temporary relocation is fine. Wise asks for your physical address and does not accept PO box addresses or mobile phone bills as proof, and it says the rules for moving vary, with some moves, such as to the Philippines, cancelling your existing Wise cards.

## What counts as a real address when you travel full time?

The honest answer is the place you genuinely live and return to. For many nomads that is a family home they stay in between trips, or a rented base they keep. If that is true for you, it is your address, and keeping it current is the single most useful thing you can do for your accounts.

What does not work is inventing one. A mail-forwarding box or virtual office is useful for letters, but providers such as Wise do not accept PO boxes as an address, and for business accounts Wise rules out mail forwarding services and online-only offices. Using an address you do not live at as your residence can break your account terms. Your tax residency is a separate question with real consequences, so ask a tax adviser in your home country rather than guessing.

## Can you open a local bank account abroad instead?

Often yes, once you hold the right visa. In Vietnam, under the State Bank of Vietnam's payment account rules as amended in 2025, a foreigner provides a passport or other foreign identity document, and a foreigner living in Vietnam also provides an entry visa, an equivalent document or proof of visa exemption. Other countries in the region set their own rules, and many banks ask for a long-stay or residence visa rather than a tourist stamp.

A nomad visa is the cleanest route if you plan to stay months in one place, because it gives you a residence you can actually prove. Our comparison of digital nomad visas in Asia covers which countries offer one.

## What does a setup that survives no fixed address look like?

| -------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------- |
| Home bank account | Salary, tax payments, home bills | A current address in that country |
| Multi-currency account (Wise, Revolut) | Cards and conversions abroad | A physical address in a supported country |
| Local account in your base country | Rent, local transfers, local QR apps | Usually a residence or long-stay visa |
| Self-custody wallet (Fizen) | Holding USDT, QR payments for visitors in Vietnam and the Philippines, eSIM data | Your recovery phrase; KYC for services such as QR Pay |

The point is not to collect accounts. It is to make sure one closed account or one failed address check never leaves you without a way to pay rent.

## Where does a stablecoin wallet fit when you have no address?

A self-custody wallet is not an account at a branch. It lives in your keys, so if your home bank closes an account after you move, the money in your wallet is not part of that account. That is the gap Fizen is built for: Fizen is building the stablecoin neobank for people on the move, a wallet you own with local QR payments, investing and travel data in the same app.

Be clear about what it does today. The Fizen wallet holds and sends tokens on many chains. As a visitor in Vietnam or the Philippines you can deposit USDT on Solana or BNB Chain from the wallet into QR Pay and pay a shop's QR code, after KYC, which applies per wallet and per device. QR Pay is not for residents of those countries, and USDT on another network, or another token, cannot be deposited. The same app sells eSIM data in 150+ countries. Fizen has no IBAN and does not replace the account your salary lands in.

The trade for holding your own keys is responsibility: nobody, Fizen included, can restore a lost recovery phrase. Fizen is backed by an investment from Tether and is not offered to US Persons.

## What should you do before you give up the flat?

1. **Decide your home base** and keep that address current with every bank and app you use.
2. **Download statements and proofs** while you still have bills in your name, and store them offline.
3. **Tell your banks how you will live,** temporary travel or a real move, and read what they say happens next.
4. **Keep your home SIM active** for bank codes, and use a travel eSIM for data.
5. **Set up a wallet you hold** and write the recovery phrase on paper before you leave.

Done once, it turns the utility-bill email from a panic into a two-minute upload, and a closed card into a shrug.

## Frequently asked questions

#### Can I open a bank account without a permanent address?

Rarely with a mainstream bank. Banks and money apps must know where you live. A real home base you return to, or a residence visa in the country you stay in, is the honest route.

#### Can I use a mail-forwarding address for my bank?

For letters, sometimes. As your residential address, usually not: Wise, for example, does not accept PO box addresses, and using an address you do not live at can break account terms.

#### What happens to my Revolut account if I move abroad?

Revolut says you need to close it and open an account in your new country if it is supported. A temporary relocation does not affect the account.

#### Can a foreigner open a bank account in Vietnam?

Yes. A foreigner provides a passport or other foreign identity document, and those living in Vietnam also provide a visa, an equivalent document or proof of visa exemption.

#### Does a self-custody wallet need an address?

The wallet itself is your keys, not an account at a branch. Services inside the app that pay out to the real world, such as Fizen QR Pay, still require KYC.

#### Is a stablecoin wallet a replacement for a bank?

Not fully, today. It covers holding, QR payments for visitors in Vietnam and the Philippines and eSIM data, but it has no IBAN for a salary. Most nomads keep one bank account at home as well.

#### A wallet that does not need a branch

Hold USDT in a wallet you own, pay local QR codes as a visitor in Vietnam and the Philippines, and buy eSIM data in 150+ countries with USDT on Solana or BNB Chain or by card via Stripe.
